The work exists in three versions. Following its unsuccessful premiere, the composer made cuts and other amendments before publishing it in 1928. With continued lack of success, he withdrew the work, eventually revising and republishing it in 1941 (Second revised version, most generally performed today). The original manuscript version was released in 2000 by the Rachmaninoff Estate to be published and recorded. The work is dedicated to Nikolai Medtner, who in turn dedicated his Second Piano Concerto to Rachmaninoff the following year.Solo Pno: 2(+Picc).2(+EH).2.2: 4.2.3.1: Timp.Perc: Str
73426BC1089F-725F-4732-B9EE-651662ED3BEDA573190Manon: Minuet and Gavotte [transcription]MANON, written by Jules Massenet (1842-1912) was composed in 1883 and premiered the following year on January 19 at the Opéra-Comique. It tells the story of a young woman who, despite being a good person, plays with the emotions of men as she falls in love with the jewelry and luxury of a Parisian life. This excerpt from the beginning of Act 3 features two dances, a Gavotte and a Menuett. It opens on the promenade of the Cours-la-Reine in Paris with the sparkling Gavotte, followed by a chorus of street vendors. The townspeople sing cheerfully about the holiday and the laughter and drinking it brings. The excitement settles into a graceful and dignified Menuett. While the text came from a trio of radical political activists with whom he was friends, Strauss managed to consistently select their love poems over the more rabble-rousing text they might have preferred. The original four songs: 1. Ruhe, meine Seele! (Henckell), 2. Cäcilie (Hart), 3. Heimliche Aufforderung (Mackay), 4. Morgen! (Mackay). While the 1st, 2nd, and 4th were orchestrated at various times by the composer, the Heimliche Aufforderung was not. Morgen! (Morning!) is serenely rapturous and remains one of Strauss' best-known and widely recorded works, with Strauss' 1897 orchestration also remaining very popular over the years. 73476BD7F950-91F0-4B89-A7B9-E7ED7C0185CDA166802Concerto for Piano No. 2 in D minor, Op. 23The first major piano concerto written by an American, CONCERTO FOR PIANO NO. 2 IN D MINOR, OP. 23 by Edward MacDowell (1860-1908) manages to be quite original, although some similarities to the concertos of Grieg, Saint-Saens, and Liszt may be found. Although it remained unperformed for the first few years after its completion in late 1885, it did finally receive its premiere in 1889, with the New York Philharmonic under Theodore Thomas, and the composer at the piano. Although many of MacDowell's smaller works continue to be performed regularly, MacDowell's PIANO CONCERTO NO. 2 is the only large-scale composition to remain in standard repertoire. 73586C026C83-2761-4D80-B13D-C065647FD6E410250138AriaAntonio Tenaglia (c.1616-1661) was a well-known composer and keyboardist during the Baroque era. Very little of his music has survived the ravages of time, however, among his output are many beautiful melodies, including this aria from one of his 67 cantatas. Written in ABA form, it starts in G minor and moves to G major before returning to the original key. The limited divisi in the second violins adds body to the ensemble. Gerald Doan's artistic arrangement is a worthwhile addition to the string orchestra repertoire.String Orchestra
