| 7103 | 68755A96-245B-417A-AD3E-1CA8CF0407CD | M916702 | Amanecida: Albazo Ecuatoriano | Originally written for string orchestra, Amanecida is a work that belongs to the Ecuadoran musical genre known as Albazo. With origins in the mid-nineteenth century, the Albazo is a form of mestiza music which combines Spanish and Indian musical elements. It was traditionally performed at dawn as a prayer to the sun as it was just appearing on the horizon. Albazo is rooted in two Indian dance forms: the Yumbo and the Danzante. The Yumbo has a rhythmic structure containing two notes, short-long with an accent on the short note. Tempo markings include tranquillo and pesante. The Danzante rhythmic structure contains a two note cell of long-short with tempo a marking of allegretto vivo. Both the Yumbo and the Danzante are in compound binary meters such as 6/8. These Indian dance forms predominantly used the minor mode with the major mode used in transitional sections. Melodic and harmonic structure of the Albazo form evolved from major pentatonic to major and minor diatonic modes. The Spanish influence of this mestiza music comes primarily from its ternary meter such as 3/4. The Albazo Amanecida combines elements of all these forms to create a seamless flow from 6/8 to 3/4 time, as well as coexisting with the well-known relationship of hemiola. Colorful, rhythmic and lively are words that capture the essence of this work. These elements combined with Cardenas’s use of modal and impressionistic harmonies evoke the spirit of Ecuadoran culture. Amanecida has been performed by the Banda Sinfonica Metropolitana de Quito and it is a part of a collection of wind band works entitled Atahualpa o el ocaso de um Imperior dedicated to the memory of Luis Humberto Salgado, one of the most prolific Ecuadoran composers of the twentieth century. | Concert Band | |

| 7105 | 687EC0DD-BE28-46E8-AA27-A82211FB1F1F | 10300122 | Beginner's Guide to the Cello v. 2 | The objective of the Beginner's Guide to the Cello is to provide interesting material with which the conscientious teacher can "build" a cellistic posture of the hands and body and lay the groundwork for future development. Specific requirements of a technical nature, such as playing in the various parts of the bow and holding the fingers in place, have been omitted for several reasons. First, to present a clear and uncluttered page, which is a primary obligation in writing for the untrained eye; and second, the use of such signs and abbreviations in elementary instruction is considered to be less effective than verbal directions from the teacher. The teacher is free, therefore, to exercise his or her own judgment and impose his or her own requirements in these matters. Careful attention has been given to the selection of material which provides a proper balance between necessary drill and a melodious musical experience. The acquisition of technical facility has been reserved for appropriate supplementary etudes. The entire series of four books is a preliminary step to the author’s Fundamentals of Violoncello Technique. Books One and Two of the Beginner’s Guide to the Cello are designed to introduce the first position with both the upward and downward extension of the left hand and to acquaint the student with a basic technique of bowing. | Cello | |
