Following the work's premiere on December 5, 1970, by the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra (conducted by the composer), Anderson withdrew the composition. Following his death, Anderson's family decided to publish this work that features the percussion section - snare drums, timpani, bongos, and marimba/xylophone - in a slow march. He was invited to lecture and conduct several of his works as part of a festival at the University of Michigan. Holst completed the full score in the library of the university and premiered the work in the president of the university’s home on May 17, 1923. The work is scored for solo flute and oboe, with string orchestra accompaniment but the solo parts may also be played by two violins. While imitative counterpoint is an organizing principle of each movement, none contains a true fugue. In October of 1923 Gustav Holst conducted the first public performance of Fugal Concerto with solist Leon Goosens and Robert Murchie. Fl + Ob Soli (alt 2 Vns), Str. | 6800 | 63E569CF-0DF3-41F8-A1A4-D51AE613781F | 10370104 | 48 Folk Songs for Strings | When arranged in systematic and progressive order, our rich heritage of folk music offers a welcome addition to the literature for elementary string instrument instruction. Although this edition is not the first to present such material in practical form, it is unique in that it is organized in such a way that it may be used to supplement any string method in which finger patterns are introduced as special units of study. The purpose of this edition is two-fold: first, to provide tuneful and interesting material for the beginning and intermediate string class at the elementary school level and, second, to provide easy solo literature for the violin, viola, cello or double bass student in a school or private studio situation. This version of 48 Folk Songs has been edited by Lynne Latham for today’s string practices. Piano Accompaniment is available separately. | Violoncello |
