Gustav Holst (1874-1934) started sketching his Fugal Concerto on his voyage to America in 1923. He was invited to lecture and conduct several of his works as part of a festival at the University of Michigan. Holst completed the full score in the library of the university and premiered the work in the president of the university’s home on May 17, 1923. The work is scored for solo flute and oboe, with string orchestra accompaniment but the solo parts may also be played by two violins. While imitative counterpoint is an organizing principle of each movement, none contains a true fugue. In October of 1923 Gustav Holst conducted the first public performance of Fugal Concerto with solist Leon Goosens and Robert Murchie. Fl + Ob Soli (alt 2 Vns), Str. (8.8.5.5.5).
