| 6042 | 580108D5-D8FC-473C-9D24-C1CE39A1CBF1 | M122491 | Sonata in G minor, Op. 19 | The SONATA in G minor, Op. 19, was written in 1901 for cello and piano, and it was Sergei Rachmaninoff's (1873-1943) final chamber work, finished right after the composer finished his famous PIANO CONCERTO No. 2, Op. 18. The public success of these two works helped Rachmaninoff recover from the depression and creative pause resulting from the failed 1897 premiere of his SYMPHONY No. 1. The SONATA premiered in Moscow on December 15, 1901, with Anatoly Brandukov, to whom the work was dedicated, playing the cello and the composer at the piano. Rachmaninoff considered the piano to be more than mere accompaniment in this work, but rather an equal to the cello, usually introducing the themes that the cello would then embellish and expand upon. This transcription for viola and piano was completed by Vadim Borisovsky. Reprint edition. | Viola and Keyboard | |

| 6054 | 58292DBC-5EC1-473F-A32D-0EE269FB5755 | 60710013 | La Vida Breve: Danse Espagnole | Manuel de Falla (1876-1946) originally wrote the 2-act opera LA VIDA BREVE (LIFE IS SHORT or THE BRIEF LIFE) between 1904 and 1905 for a composition competition which offered a large monetary prize and the hope of a performance at one of Madrid's theaters. Based on a tragic poem by Carlos Fernández Shaw called El Chavalillo (The Little Lass), it tells the story of a young gypsy girl who is passionately in love with a well-to-do young man. When she learns that he must marry a woman in his social class, she crashes the wedding, the young man denies he knows her, then she falls dead at his feet with a broken heart as a sign of contempt for her former lover. Despite winning the prize, no premiere materialized until the Casino Municipal in Nice staged the work on April 1, 1913. After some suggestions from Claude Debussy, de Falla revised the work into the standard version. While the opera is staged irregularly, some of its sections are popular for concert performance. Among those is DANZA ESPAÑOLA (SPANISH DANCE), originally published as Interlude and Dance. In the opera, it takes place at the betrothal celebration of the young man and the woman he must marry. In the dance, the infectious theme moves about the orchestra as a contrast to the melancholy (for the gypsy girl) of the story surrounding this party. This version is arranged by Fritz Kreisler for Violin and Piano. Reprint Edition. | Violin and Piano | |
