| 6021 | 57B91524-985B-4D5B-B88A-A65D1AF14182 | A187002 | Belle Helene, La: Overture | Jacques Offenbach's (1819-1880) opéra bouffe in three acts, La belle Hélène (The Beautiful Helen) parodies the Greek myth of Helen and Paris' elopement, which set off the Trojan War according to Homer's Iliad. Premiered at the Théâtre des Variétés in Paris on December 17th, 1864, the opera proved popular then and has remained a part of the repertoire, receiving regular revivals. The Overture to the opera was newly arranged by Eduard Haensch for the Austrian premiere in 1865, and it is this version that remains one of the favorites for orchestral programming. | 6039 | 57F9A1BF-271D-4936-91C3-DB805AE84B18 | R168 | Suite After Old English Songs for English Horn and Strings | The Suite was originally commissioned by Roger Rush as a solo vehicle for English Horn and band after he experienced difficulty finding suitable repertoire for this combination. The successful 1996 premiere led to the composer making additional versions of the solo part for F horn and alto saxophone, with piano reductions for all three instruments and an arrangement with string orchestra accompaniment. The work is comprised of four movements, each based on a combination of English folk melodies: I. Early One Morning, II. Green Bushes, III. I'll Love My Love, IV. The Wraggle-Taggle Gypsies. Duration ca. 20'. | English Horn, Alto Sax, or F Horn Solo: Str | |
| 6040 | 57FACEAF-81AB-4668-89EE-60C67038E722 | S009001 | Symphony No. 4 in A, Op. 90 "Italian" | From 1829 to 1831, Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) was occupied by a tour of Europe. Out of that tour came several of his best-known works, including Symphony No. 3 "Scottish," The Hebrides overture, and Symphony No. 4 "Italian." Mendelssohn completed this last work in 1833, conducting its premiere at the London (Royal) Philharmonic Society on May 13 of that year. Despite its lauded position now in the orchestral repertoire, and the fact that it is among the most popular of Mendelssohn's works, the composer was never satisfied with the symphony, periodically attempting revisions over the years. As a result, it remained unpublished until 1851, a few years after Mendelssohn's death, and it was the original 1833 version that found its way to publication. It is this version that is still most frequently performed today. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 2.2.0.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set). Study score. | 2.2.2.2: 2.2.0.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set) |
