| 6086 | 5894867A-AE2A-4900-80F9-19359CF86BD8 | 10200076 | Blessed Are They from A German Requiem | Johannes Brahms became known for his four symphonies and his great choral work A GERMAN REQUIEM. In the opening chorus, "Blessed Are They That Mourn," he reaches heights of sublimity. Performed at Bremen Cathedral on Good Friday, 1868, it was attended by many famous musicians, including Joachim and Oara Schumann. It is still held as his great masterpiece. Albert Oliver Davis' arrangement of BLESSED ARE THEY (No. 1: Selig sind, die da Leid tragen) from A GERMAN REQUIEM will do justice to this great composer and be a welcome addition to any library as scored for the school symphony orchestra. 2.2.2+BCl.2: 4.3.3.1: Timp. 2 Perc: Strings (9.8.7.6.5) | 2.2.2+BCl.2: 4.3.3.1: Timp. 2 Perc: Strings (9.8.7.6.5) | |

| 6095 | 58BA005E-4F50-45AE-B19E-93B39986635B | A674102 | Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth) | Fresh from the loss of his oldest daughter Maria Mahler, and knowing he had a serious heart condition, Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) crafted Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth) in the years 1908 and 1909. The first performance took place on November 20, 1911 at the Tonhalle in Munich, conducted by Bruno Walter. It encompasses six settings of old Chinese poems, four of them by the Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai, loosely translated into German by Hans Bethge. Conscious of his own mortality, Mahler filled his orchestral song cycle with themes of resignation, fading beauty, and autumn loneliness. The last song, roughly the same length as the previous five movements combined, serves as a sprawling, yet deeply personal farewell to both love and life.
