He is one of the 19th century's most important composers and performers for the organ, counted together with other greats such as Gigout, Guilmant, and Widor. The orchestral SYMPHONY No. 3 in C minor, popularly known as the "Organ Symphony", was completed in 1886 at what could be considered the artistic peak of Saint-Saëns’ (1835-1921) career. The composer said of the work, "I gave everything to it I was able to give. What I have here accomplished, I will never achieve again." Seeming to recognize that it would be his last attempt at the symphonic form, the composer filled the work with virtuoso piano passages, brilliant Romantic-era orchestral writing, and the sound of a cathedral-sized pipe organ. The ADAGIO movement is here transcribed for organ alone by Emile Bernard. | Solo Organ

Several of the titles coordinate with other books in the Easy Original Duets and Trios series and may be played in mixed combinations of instruments. There is even a very nice easier selection that can be performed with snare drum. Teachers looking for new and interesting material will be pleased to find several enjoyable selections in a variety of styles, suitable for players whose performance abilities range from beginner to intermediate levels. We enthusiastically recommend the easier duets and trios as first concert material. The note ranges in these selections are very limited and the writing style encourages independent thought. | Alto Saxophone

| 6016 | 57B11880-D9C2-4890-BCA4-05A9BBB6F13C | A191702 | Russian Easter Festival: Overture on Liturgical Themes, Op. 36 | Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov's (1844-1908) overture Russian Easter Festival was written in 1888, at the same time as the composer's well-known suite for orchestra, Scheherazade. Both works include short violin cadenzas to separate some of the sections. For the context of the Russian Easter Festival overture, Rimsky-Korsakov was inspired by two Biblical passages that preface the score: Psalm 68 and a passage from the Gospel of St. Mark. The music was based on an eighteenth-century collection of Orthodox church canticles, including a chant for Russian Easter known as Obikhod (Christ is arisen). The work premiered in St. Petersburg on December 15, 1888 at a Russian symphony concert. Study score. | 3(1dPicc).2.2.2: 4.2.3.1: Timp.Perc(4-5): Hp: Str(9-8-7-6-5 in set) | |
