| Program Notes | The text for We Have a Dream was inspired by poetry written by fourth graders from Sand School in Hartford, Connecticut. Composer Paul Reuter asked students to complete the sentence "I have a dream that . . ." and to express their own dreams and hopes for their future. The students asked that the beginning be changed to "We have a dream that . . ." to show that these are everyone+s dreams, not just individuals. The thoughts expressed deal with poverty, opportunity, the environment, child abuse, drugs and violence on the streets, and racial harmony. It was the composer+s hope to make all of us think about these important issues by having a children+s choir sing the text inspired by children+s poetry. The first performance of We Have a Dream was given by the Hartford Symphony Orchestra and the Connecticut Children+s Chorus on "A Tribute to Martin Luther King" concert in January 1994. A subsequent performance on a Family Concert in May 1994 added slides of original photography, mostly of children+s faces during the choral sections. (from files, ca.1995, author unknown) |
