The remaining three movements of the suite have been lost. | 5983 | 57448B78-BC59-4A73-879F-B84E96E411F4 | SO182C | Ragtime March | Two styles of music that are not common to orchestral playing are masterfully combined in this bright and energetic selection. Ragtime music, generally performed by jazz bands, and march music, historically performed in a marching band setting, are intertwined in Ragtime March, producing a fun and entertaining piece of music. In this arrangement, each section of the orchestra has an opportunity to shine. Written in the approachable key of G, the rhythmic patterns and harmonies presented are stylistic of the two genres of music. It is fast moving, culminating with a grand march and subtle hints of the ragtime theme. | String Orchestra

The work’s first performance was conducted by Mahler in Essen in 1906. The tragic ending has been seen as unexpected, since the symphony was composed at what was apparently a happy time in Mahler’s life. His second daughter was born during the course of the work’s composition. As Mahler stated in a letter to his biographer, “My Sixth will propound riddles the solution of which may be attempted only by a generation which has absorbed and truly digested my first five symphonies.” | 4(+Picc).4(3-4dEH).3(ECl,BCl).4(+CBsn): 8.6.4.1: Timp.Perc(2): Hp(2).Clsta: Str
