| 5887 | 55fdfbb9-9e3c-11f0-a418-0022482c9682 | W750191 | Symphony No. 3 in D minor | Composed by GUSTAV MAHLER (1860-1911) between 1893 and 1896, SYMPHONY NO. 3 IN D MINOR is the longest symphony in the repertoire. Performances will often include a brief intermission between the first movement and the other five. Scoring the work for large orchestra, a women’s choir, a boys’ choir, and solo alto, Mahler turned to two sources of text: Nietzsche’s Also Sprach Zarathustra and the collection of German folk poetry Des Knaben Wunderhorn. The concluding Adagio, acclaimed for its expansive sublimity, was described by the Swiss critic William Ritter as “perhaps the greatest Adagio written since Beethoven”. The first performance of the entire symphony took place at Krefeld on June 9, 1902, the composer conducting the Gürzenich Orchestra. | Orchestra, Solo Alto, Women's Chorus, Boys' Chorus | |

In 1850, Brahms was introduced to “gypsy-style” music through Hungarian violinist Ede Reményi, including the csárdás “Bártfai emlék” (Memories of Bártfa) by Hungarian composer Béla Kéler, which became the basis for Hungarian Dance No. 5. Arranged for many different instruments and ensembles over the years, this orchestration by Antonín Dvo?ák (1841-1904) of Hungarian Dances Nos. 17 through 21 was one of many commissioned by the original publisher in the late 19th century. It is referred to as the SCHÖPFUNGSMESSE (CREATION MASS) because it includes the words "qui tollis peccata mundi" in the Gloria. Haydn did recycle music from Adam and Eve's final duet in THE CREATION, so scandalizing the Empress Maria Theresa that she demanded Haydn rewrite that passage for her personal copy.
