| Program Notes | The neo-baroque format of concertino-ripieno is a means for effecting ritornello-like closure in the compositional format. Cross-rhythms alternating compound/simple duple meters in quick succession are typical and evident throughout the opening. Both in the form and textural style, the composer makes use of the 16th century imitative and nonimitative ricercar, alternating sections marked by pointed rhythmic and melodic motives in "points of imitation" with free rhapsodic sections, marked by cadential flourishes and free improvisations designed to emphasize timbrel/dynamic effects. --Gerald Benjamin |
