566152c772b1-9e39-11f0-a418-0022482c968250250236RhythmaniaRhythmania is a piece that will have young string orchestra students on the edge of their seats as they focus on counting to stay on track in this mixed meter piece. This D Major level 1.5 piece introduces the concept of mixed meters in a fun and engaging way. The piece moves between 6/8 and 2/4 but there are lots of eighth notes to subdivide the beats and help with counting. A contrasting d minor section allows the students to settle into 6/8 for awhile, but soon the original mixed meter melody returns. Every section gets a chance to shine as they play the melody and every section gets to provide the important subdivided harmony part. Striking the right balance of challenge and fun, Rhythmania is the perfect piece to introduce young string players to the very important skill of counting in mixed meters.String Orchestra

566552D191A5-BC71-47B9-9F67-C1124A190A3B10100145Blessed Are TheyJohannes Brahms was not a religious man in the usual sense of the term, so it should be of no surprise that when he wrote the "German Requiem," it did not follow the prescribed five movement form of the traditional requiem mass, but instead contained seven movements. The first time Brahms combined orchestra with chorus and soloists, it is considered to be his choral masterwork. While the style is unabashedly romantic with all the depth and beauty associated with the music of Brahms, the form is clearly influenced by Handel and reflects Brahms' intensive study of earlier masters. "Blessed Are They" is the sublime first movement of the "German Requeim," and the original version pairs the chorus with the orchestra to create a heavy, somber mood. This skillfully crafted arrangement for concert band has become a staple in literature for developing bands.Concert Band

This arrangement incorporates two contrasting folk tunes from the region. Waly, Waly (aka The Water is Wide) is taken (with many liberties) from the setting by Cecil Sharp in the Novello’s School Songs published in 1908. It is a lyric tune with flowing melodic lines, while Blow Away the Morning Dew plays in a very light mood and bounces throughout.String Orchestra

567052e9d4c2-9e39-11f0-a418-0022482c968250250240Los Caballos de Andalucia: The Horses of AndalusiaLos Caballos de Andalucia (The Horses of Andalusia) is a rhythmic Spanish-flavored piece in 3/4 time that would suit middle school level players. The key is E minor with the notation range remaining in the first position for all instruments. The viola part doubles the second violin part to add a solid mid-support for the upper melody and a balanced counter melody line when required. Throughout the piece, players are encouraged to create bold sound colors using full bows and exaggerated dynamics, contrasting with accents and crisp rhythms bowing in outer sections. The piano part drives the work rhythmically and fills in harmonically to enhance the overall performance. This work would make a lively finale for a concert program.String Orchestra, Piano

Water from the springs is collected into rivulets and then a creek. But after it crosses State Highway 7, a National Scenic Highway, it flows into a beautiful lake which supplies the power for the old grist mill from which Mill Creek gets its name. This piece is a musical journey which follows the creek's travels.String Orchestra, Harp (opt.)

In a single long movement, Concertstück is a lyrical rhapsody that combines French impressionism and Romanian folk music. It is a phenomenal work for showcasing a violist's abilities. This piece brings to mind at least three different things that could occur when one is out walking with a friend. First, you could be walking and the sun is shining, the air pleasing, and you would be in complete agreement with your friend. Second, you could be in conversation with a companion while walking, and the conversation would flow back and forth, both of you shedding colorful details and good information. The third occurrence could be when one is out walking and something interferes with what you are doing. It could be the beginnings of rain, some pesky bugs, an argument, or puddles in your path. Everyone may imagine their own, completely different, scenario of what this piece may mean to them. Have your students write their thoughts and send them to me, along with a recording of them performing the piece. I would love to hear their performance and read their thoughts.String Orchestra

567852FFA936-B85C-418A-874F-387FBB6D2612A774690Sinfonia No. 7: String Symphony in D minorThis is the seventh among thirteen string symphonies written between 1821 and 1823, when Mendelssohn was twelve to fourteen years old. Like the other twelve, it was written as a tribute to early Classical symphonies by composers such as Haydn, J.C. Bach, C.P.E. Bach, and Mozart, a feature much more obvious in the first six as they were more imitative. The second grouping, starting with Sinfonia No. 7, show more of the composer's emerging personal style. Mendelssohn composed most of the thirteen works in three movements, but his seventh is an exception to the rule, with four movements instead. A count of 8-8-5-5-5 strings are included in this set.String Orchestra (8-8-5-5-5 in set)
567953054497-9e39-11f0-a418-0022482c968250250243Nighttime, Thoughts of the DayOne thing that most of us do at bedtime, is to review the happenings of the day. The composer has chosen a day that has gone well, and therefore, the thoughts in review are very pleasant. Bar 8 starts the day's review, and is quite serene in character. Bar 15, the ritard should be quite substantial, especially the last 3 quarter notes in bar 16. Bar 17 picks up the lovely melody again, this time with counter activity in the cellos and basses. Bar 29 should be a little faster, as the pizzicato technique sets a different tone for the day that was. Bar 41 is a repeat of the main melody, this time, without the counter low strings. One could think that the nighttime thoughts are beginning to calm, and sleep is on its way. All in all, this is a lovely selection that would be a wonderful offset to a fast, aggressive piece on your program. All parts have important material, and it should be a solid learning experience for your ensemble to play musically!String Orchestra
