Spurred by his friend Richard Strauss, he took some musical ideas from this collection and created HANSEL AND GRETEL (HÄNSEL UND GRETEL), a full-length opera based on the Grimm brothers' fairy tale. Completed in 1893, it received its first performance on December 23, 1893 at the Hoftheater in Weimar under the direction of Strauss. As a result, popular opinion has enduringly identified it with the Christmas season. In Act 2, the two children try to find their way out of a darkening forest and meet the Sandman, who makes them drowsy by placing grains of sand into their eyes. Before they fall asleep, they sing the celebrated Evening Prayer. In the dream pantomime which follows, a host of fourteen angels gather to watch over the slumbering children. | 5194 | 4B3FE570-1B67-4BB5-8651-DF34F16CDCDE | 10160004 | Concerto for Tuba and Band | Seldom does the tuba receive the proper attention it deserves as a melodic instrument. It is true that its value as the foundation of the sound of both bands and orchestras somewhat hinders its use melodically, but the instrument possesses a true beauty of tone that should be heard more often. The tuba is capable of exquisite emotional range and sensitivity. It is far more versatile than most would believe and can execute rhythmic passages with surprising agility. This concerto explores these capabilities, placing the instrument above, below, and inside the accompaniment, creating unique sonorities while giving the tuba player the melodies he or she has always wanted to play. Concerto for Tuba was composed for Ronald Bishop, long-time principal tuba of the Cleveland Orchestra. Band, orchestra, and piano accompaniments are all available from the publisher. | Tuba Solo, Concert Band | |

The young Jacobson presented Straus with a libretto for Ein Walzertraum at a coffee house in the Vienna Prater in 1906.
