The piece was finished in May 1878 while Tchaikovsky was living on an idyllic country estate in the Ukrainian village of Brailov. This version was orchestrated by famed Russian composer, music teacher and conductor, Alexander Glazunov. The third piece in the set, "Mélodie" showcases Tchaikovsky’s mastery of melody. Tchaikovsky also described it as "chant sans paroles" (song without words) with a song like quality throughout the piece. The score frequently shifts tonalities, and there are many fresh adventures in sounds and many opportunities for expressive soloistic style. The one-movement work is written in a quasi-choral style and is a refreshing contrast to the driving, dynamic works which are more typical of Williams. - Program Note from Program Notes for Band | Concert Band | |
