A precursor to other childhood-themed works by Debussy, Fauré, and Ravel, the work remains a common part of the orchestral repertoire. The petite suite includes the following movements: 1. Marche: Trompette et Tambour (Trumpet and Drum), 2. Berceuse: La Poupée (The Doll), 3. Impromptu: La Toupie (The Top), 4. Duo: Petit Mari, Petite Femme!..., and 5. Galop: Le Bal. | 5002 | 482CF768-5C09-4BAD-B897-AED32A74E0C5 | S726CB | Tempered Steel | As we grow stronger and more resilient through hardship, we become "tempered." Tempered Steel is a celebration of our triumph over these unavoidable hardships and obstacles that we regularly face. As the title implies, the metallic sonorities of the wind band are continually explored and developed throughout the work, while the "tempest" is a symmetric hexachord that is exposed and developed through a variety of juxtaposed gestures and themes. Tempered Steel was "forged" in 1997 as the first work to be commissioned by the Big 12 Band Directors Association. This 2nd edition resulted from Dr. Young's request to make a few very minor changes in the work, based on his experience hearing dozens of performances, and hearing from conductors who have wrestled with the difficulties inherent in the score. | Concert Band

The two-harpsichord version dates from the second half of the 1730s. A reconstruction of the work by music historian Max Schneider was performed by two violinists at the Leipzig Bach Festival in 1920. The gently-flowing Adagio has seen comparison with the central movement of Bach's double violin concerto, BWV 1043. Edited by Wilhelm Rust for Bach Gesellschaft Ausgabe (Bach Society Edition). Instrumentation: Str (2-2-2-1-1 in set): Soli Harpsichords (2) in set. Reprint edition. | Str (2-2-2-1-1 in set): Soli Harpsichords (2) in set
| 5012 | 485C0296-ADDD-4BAC-8CC0-691028D1F662 | S860CB | The Rose, Shamrock and Thistle | This work is subtitled as "Patrol of the United Kingdom." The patrol is a popular musical devise that depicts the approach of a body of people, soldiers, or a band, climaxing in the manner of an approaching band just as it reaches the listener, and then gradually passes in the distance. For the Sousa Band's tour of the British Isles in 1901, Sousa collected a group of traditional and popular songs to fashion his patrol, represnting the traditional and heraldic symbols for England, Ireland, and Scotland. Quotations used: 1. The Campbells Are Coming- Scotland, 2. St. Patrick's Day- Ireland, 3. The Soldiers of the Queen- England, 4. The Minstrel Boy- Ireland, 5. The British Grenadiers- England, 6. The Blue Bells of Scotland- Scotland, 7. For He is an Englishman- England, and 8. Rule Britannia- England. This arrangement is part of the "New Sousa Band Editions" arrangements published in honor of the Sousa Sesquicentennial, celebrating the compositions and performance practice of John Philip Sousa with his legendary band (1892 - 1931). Stylistic choices are adapted from available sources, including the original scores, parts and sketches, first printings, printed parts used by the Sousa Band, recordings by Sousa's Band, period writings, word of mouth from former Sousa Band musicians, and verbal accounts from the period. It is the goal of these editions to make this very special musical legacy more easily available for modern performances. | Concert Band | |
| 5013 | 485CADBF-BB90-4521-B09B-458FBF4C857C | A682690 | Kwang Hsu (Chinese March) | Carl Emil Paul Lincke (1866-1946) served as a composer and theater conductor. Thought of as the "father" of the Berlin operetta, he was best known for his operetta Frau Luna, though his Berliner Luft (Berlin Air) remains the unofficial anthem of Berlin, and The Glow-Worm from his operetta Lysistrata was later famously adapted by Johnny Mercer. His Kwang Hsü (Chinese March), while not well-known, is a solid march in the style of the early 20th century, and it is perfect for a program in need of a short work or something with which audiences may not already be familiar. | 5020 | 4886D770-A98E-438E-8FF6-7D3BB2109AD6 | M916302 | Alla marcia | Beginning with a stately drum roll-off, Alla marcia may seem like an ordinary march. It doesn't take long after the trumpets announce the military style melody to see that the work is 'like a march' in its sound and texture. However, an occasional three-two bar adds sparkle and interest whenever it arrives. Alla marcia can be programmed wherever you might use a more conventional march, but want something a little 'left of center.' | Concert Band |
