Program Notes
I wrote RUSH during the summer months of 2000 when I was living in the home that my family keeps in Denmark. As this was the case, I could not help but to be drawn to thinking about characteristics that were particularly American in this music. And, as I was writing, it seemed to me that I was summarizing in musical ways a kind of boisterous enthusiasm that is typical of young America. The title of this music was chosen as an indication of the vigor and liveliness of American youth, and the music tries to portray these kind of sensations. The first gesture sweeps upward in a "rush" of sound. This is one of the characteristic signatures in the music. I imagined phrases that use the word "rush" in typical American ways that are metaphors for the boundless energy of this country and, also, for the rapid pace of American life. Youth is surely the time to embrace this headlong, hurtling pursuit. This music was written especially for the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and its music director and conductor David Harman. He and I have known each other from the time we were, indeed, younger, and I hope that the music asserts the caprice of youth for him as much as it does for me. I am grateful to The Commission Project for generous support for my creation of this music. -David Liptak
