36263341EA99-C9E1-4DB9-B864-1250E43EFEEDR51FOShadowcatcher for Brass Quintet and OrchestraEdward Curtis, the great American photographer, traveled the American West during the early decades of the 20th century, taking literally of tens of thousands of photographs of Native Americans, chronicling their ancient lifestyle - capturing a time and place destined to disappear in the onrush of the modern age. His mysterious, beautiful and powerful photographs had a distinctive play of light and dark, and the Native Americans dubbed him the "Shadowcatcher". Four of his photographs are the inspiration for this composition. I. Offering to the Sun (Tewa, 1925), II. Among the Aspens (Chippewa, 1926), The Vanishing Race (Navajo, 1904), IV. Dancing to Restore an Eclipsed Moon (Kwakiutl, 1914). Commissioned by the American Brass Quintet, the orchestral version was written for the Orquesta Sinfonica Carlos Chavez of Mexico City, the Wind Ensemble Version for Butler University, and recorded by the American Brass Quintet with the Juilliard Wind Ensemble for New World Records. A reduction for quintet and piano is also available from the publisher.Brass Quintet: 2+1.2.2.2: 4.2.2.1: Timp.Perc(4): Str

3629336140B3-F53A-4BE0-A4FC-BC162F137C4BA178202Concerto for Clarinet in A, K. 622Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's (1756-1791) completed his three-movement Concerto for Clarinet in A, K. 622 on a few weeks before his death in 1791, and it is considered his last great completed work. It was composed originally for the basset clarinet, an instrument invented by Mozart's close friend, Anton Stadler, the most gifted clarinetist in Vienna, and the person for whom the concerto was written. The basset clarinet had an extended lower range of which it is believed Mozart made use, but the original manuscript was lost after Mozart's death, and the published version was altered to be playable by more standard clarinets. The work was likely first performed by Stadler on the basset clarinet in Prague on October 16, 1791. As Mozart died in December in Vienna, it is highly unlikely that the composer heard his work performed. Instrumentation: 2.0.0.2: 2.0.0.0: Str (4-4-3-3-3 in set): Solo Clarinet in set. 36303366BD9B-3510-40F2-B195-0500E138135252240483Of the Father's Love BegottenPerfect as a special meditative prelude during the Christmas season, this arrangement of the ancient chant tune opens with a transparent texture that climaxes with "leggiero" passage work in the strings before ending calmly and sparsely. All parts are of moderate difficulty, presenting a wonderful opportunity to feature your pianist, and the string parts are equally effective when performed by a quintet, one on a part.Piano and String Ensemble
36313369B9C9-48A9-4106-99E5-3644E3158E26A931490Song of Hiawatha, The: Overture, Op. 30, No. 3The overture to THE SONG OF HIAWATHA was composed in 1899 for the Norwich Triennial Musical Festival performance of HIAWATHA'S WEDDING FEAST, then published separately from any of the three Hiawatha cantatas as Op. 30, No. 3. While each of the cantatas is usually performed separately, the complete trilogy and the new overture was presented at Birmingham in 1901, along with Edward Elgar's THE DREAM OF GERONTIUS. Stunningly brilliant, with flowing melodies, dance-like rhythms, lush chords, and dramatic orchestration, the overture's main melody is actually derived from the spiritual, "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen." A work that can stand next to those of his British contemporaries such as Holst and Vaughn-Williams, this overture is often performed separately from the cantatas, functioning as light music with some depth. 36333372E56B-6499-4E92-93D2-FF8951B5311BB580Selected Studies for Oboe, Volume 1This collection of etudes, duets, and exercises was written, compiled and edited by Russian Oboist and Pedagogue Yuri Maizels to provide the most efficient means possible for young players to learn the basics of oboe playing. The composers, Hinke (a German composer who taught and worked in St. Petersburg during the reign of the Tsars), Wiedemann, Garnier and Debondue are among the finest of writers and pedagogues featured in this series. These studies begin very simply and gradually increase in difficulty, becoming more challenging melodically and rhythmically, with increasing comprehension of the instrument. Short phrases enable the student to learn to control both breathing and intonation. This collection of studies, in three volumes, can help a high school student or young professional to master technique, breathing, and intonation while developing the endurance that is vitally important for oboe players.

Yuri Maizels was born in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) in the former Soviet Union. After the conclusion of the Second World War, he was accepted at age 13 into the Naval Boarding Musical School in Leningrad (the school which had been organized in 1873 by Rimsky-Korsakov), to study the oboe. In 1964, he graduated from the College of Music with multiple degrees in oboe performance, oboe teaching, and conducting. During his career, Yuri Maizels played in major orchestras, working with such well-known conductors such as Yuri Temirkanov, Mariss Jansons, Yuri Simionov, Valery Gergiev and others.

Comprised of 15 songs total by the end, each sets folktale texts, as published by Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano, to music with piano accompaniment, though some also have orchestral accompaniment. The ninth song, WO DIE SCHÖNEN TROMPETEN BLASEN (Where the lovely trumpets play), is arguably the emotional centerpiece of the entire cycle. Against a backdrop of distant drums and fanfares, the song expresses the hope and fear of two war-torn lovers on the threshold of impending fate. This Kalmus edition is transposed to the key of C minor for medium voice. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.0: 4.2.0.0: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set): solo voice.
