| 3641 | 33889C22-CFEF-4059-A357-136622E5DC60 | S978CB | Symphony No. 5 | Written in a single summer month while World War II was still raging in 1944, Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5 would become not only one of the composer’s most celebrated and performed works, it would stand among the giants in all of 20th Century classical compositions. Cast in four movements, Prokofiev once gave a statement that he intended it as "a hymn to free and happy Man, to his mighty powers, his pure and noble spirit." He added, "I cannot say that I deliberately chose this theme. It was born in me and clamoured for expression. The music matured within me. It filled my soul." Deliberate or not, his statement likely helped placate the Communist Soviet Party, who under Stalin ruthlessly, and often fatally, censored the art and music of the time. This Southern Music publication represents the first complete band transcription of Prokofiev’s monumental work by one of the world’s most respected wind band editors, Dr. R. Mark Rogers. The edition provides a rare opportunity in the symphonic wind band repertoire for ensembles to perform an orchestral masterpiece in its entirety. | Concert band | |

| 3647 | 33A01ABB-A18A-44FB-B655-E4CE1DD660EA | S1012CB | Christmas Overture for Band | Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Christmas Overture appeared posthumously in 1925. Originally orchestrated by Sydney Baynes, it features God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and Hark the Herald Angels Sing. It is thought by some to have been put together from incidental music he wrote for a children’s play called The Forest of Wild Thyme. This band arrangement, based on Baynes' orchestra score, omits the largely developmental middle section of the original, shortening the performance time by two minutes, while retaining all of the traditional carol material. | Concert Band | |

While technically written in only six weeks, much of the score is borrowed from Bellini's recent failure, Zaira. This rendition of the tragic story of star-crossed lovers premiered on March 11, 1830, at Venice's Teatro La Fenice, Pietro Tonassi conducting. A swelling drum roll introduces the effervescent Overture, which sets the stage for the opening chorus which takes place in a hall of the Capulet palace. The composer also used materials he composed while employed as conductor of the attendants’ band at the Worcester and County Lunatic Asylum (now called Powick Hospital). Elgar gave both suites the opus numbers 1a and 1b respectively, in recognition of the materials being his earliest surviving compositions. The Wand of Youth First Suite was premiered in 1907 at the Queen’s Hall in London under the direction of Henry Wood. The Wand of Youth Second Suite premiered at the Worcester Three Choirs Festival in 1908, under the direction of the composer. While the suites in their entirety are not typically programmed, individual movements were required repertoire for small salon orchestras from 1910 into the 1960s and are often paired with other shorter pieces by Elgar.
