| Program Notes | Sonata No. 1 for Violin and Piano was written and then revised during my Ford Foundation Composer-in-Residence Grant year. This work was my attempt to do a "big" violin/piano sonata in the Romantic vein. My older brother was a violinist, and I had lived, it seemed, my entire life with the sounds of a practicing violinist ringing in my ears. The first movement is based upon an idea that is a kind of musical representation of a grand mountain range as seen from a distance, presented in a classical sonata form. The second is an impassioned musical outpouring of Romantic yearnings and realizations. The last movement could be considered a joyous explosion of energy and virtuosity realized by both performers culminating in the arch form reprise of the musical idea of the mountainous vista.
