The composer turned to the Bible against a personal background of grave and disturbing news: Hans von Bülow, the famous conductor, a close friend and ardent devotee of Dvo?ák, had died a month earlier in Cairo, ad Dvo?ák's 80-year-old father lay gravely ill in distant Bohemia - he died on March 26, two days after the last of the BIBLICAL SONGS was completed. Dvo?ák chose for these songs verses from the Czech version of the Book of Psalms, gradually changing from expressions of despair and supplication to jubilation. The songs were first published (with Czech, English, and German texts) in 1895, and some of the songs premiered on September 26, 1895 at Mladá Boleslav, O. Schellerova singing. Editions for high voice and low voice are available from the publisher. This edition includes only English text. | Low Voice and Piano | |

The scene involves Volivia and her beloved Sartagones, trapped in a web of rival jealousies and political peril. Volivia implores Sartagones to plead to Porus, her father, on their behalf, but Porus angrily arrives to remind him of an ancient family quarrel that must keep the lovers apart. When Sartagones threatens to commit suicide, a change of heart compels Porus to give them his blessing and the scene concludes in a euphoric trio. Schikaneder eventually offered his libretto to composer Joseph Weigl. This setting premiered at the Theater an der Wien in August 1805. It is referred to as the SCHÖPFUNGSMESSE (CREATION MASS) because it includes the words "qui tollis peccata mundi" in the Gloria. Haydn did recycle music from Adam and Eve's final duet in THE CREATION, so scandalizing the Empress Maria Theresa that she demanded Haydn rewrite that passage for her personal copy.
