| 2941 | 29A73964-862D-45E7-ADF0-F27040DA1199 | MR00439 | Concerto Serenade | Composed during the summer of 1964 at the Aspen Music Festival, performed by students under the direction of Leonard Slatkin. The composer writes: "The first movement has much the feel of a Mozart string divertimento. The "distant relative" of the second movement was Richard Wagner, and there are hidden quotations of his work throughout. The short scherzo movement, which leads to a solo lament, eventually lands upon a lighthearted rondo, unashamedly in G major, a compositional ploy that drew criticism in its time. | Violin Solo and Small String Orchestra (43321) | |

Based on the legendary 13th century romance of Lohengrin, a knight of the Holy Grail, who is sent in a boat pulled by swans to rescue the maiden, Elsa, who must never ask his name, the "Bridal Chorus" from the beginning of Act III is now universally recognized as "Here Comes the Bride." But the exciting "Prelude" to Act III is nearly as well-known, and remains a major part of the orchestra repertoire. This edition is written with a concert ending by Fritz Hoffmann. | 2953 | 29C4370B-59BF-4036-AA38-789FB5C1E6FA | A637502 | Overture in F-sharp minor for Strings and Basso Continuo, TWV 55:fis1 | This overture is typical of the French style, and the concert element is also not completely missing in it. The fact that such a merry movement as Les Plaisirs is in a minor key proves that Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767), like Handel, did not always use the major and minor key in the sense of happiness and sadness for characterization. The lively Angloise must surely be interpreted flirtingly, but even more so La Badinerie Italienne must show utmost gracefulness. The Louire with its echo in a lower octave is a contemplative piece, and also the two Menuets are of a similar nature, even if less heavy. The Courante with its eight measures may hurry along even more. The final "Prestidigitator" constitutes a vivid character movement. -Friedrich Noack. | 2956 | 29d5b53b-9e3b-11f0-a418-0022482c9682 | M395491 | Intermezzo from the Opera Goyescas | Enrique Granados (1867-1916) first wrote a six-piece piano suite titled GOYESCAS in 1911, inspired by the paintings of Francisco Goya. The suite was well-received, so Granados was encouraged by American pianist Ernest Schelling to compose an opera based on the music. The opera, which consisted of only three scenes in a single act, was unique for requiring that the libretto be fitted to the already-existing melodies rather than the usual reverse. The INTERMEZZO from the opera has become a popular concert piece in its own right, and it is commonly performed by orchestra and by an arrangement for cello and piano. This version for cello quartet has been transcribed and edited by Emilio Colón. | Violoncello Quartet

The 'deceiving' Slavic mood (Volga Boatsmen in the accompaniment of the solo violin) is maintained until the entrance of the straightforward statement of the theme at the end of the composition, revealing the final musical 'surprise.' | String Orchestra
