It premiered on March 25, 1879 at the Zofín concert hall in Prague under the direction of Adolf Cech. Simrock finally published it in 1888, following revisions. Dvorák dedicated it to the Hans von Bülow as a gesture to the conductor for promoting his music. It was assigned a high opus number, contrary to the composer’s wishes, as his publisher shrewdly decided to sell it as a mature work. This Kalmus Critical Edition is edited by Frantisek Bartos. Included among these was his tone poem THE NOON WITCH (POLEDNICE), OP. 108, B. 196. It relates the tale of a mother who warns her unruly child that if he doesn’t mend his behavior, the Noon Witch will come to snatch him away. When the witch does finally appear, the mother tries to protect him in an effort that results in tragic consequences. The work premiered on June 3, 1896 at the Prague Conservatory under the baton of Antonín Bennewitz. Henry Wood directed the first public performance in London on November 21. The ballet was the last piece of music Bartók wrote that was intended for the stage. The ballet was in turn based on a Melchior Lengyel short story in which three men kidnap a young woman, bring her to a brothel, and force her to seduce three men, the last of which is the title's "Mandarin," who is eventually killed by the kidnappers. The controversial subject matter of the piece and the public’s reaction to it convinced Bartók to rework his ballet into an orchestral suite, which premiered in Budapest in October 1928. Evidence has been found at the Sharp Top indicating that it is one of oldest human habitats in eastern North America. A large piece of rock was carved out of this mountain in 1852 to become part of the Washington Monument. Having climbed to the top of Sharp Top, the composer was inspired by the spectacular view to present this musical depiction of that historic landmark. | Concert Band | |

Comprised of 15 songs total by the end, each sets folktale texts, as published by Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano, to music with piano accompaniment, though some also have orchestral accompaniment. The first song, DER SCHILDWACHE NACHTLIED (THE SENTINEL'S NIGHTSONG), illustrates the conflict of the soldier, alternating between a complex military-style with trumpet calls and drum rolls and the more tender music of his beloved. The Sentinel defiantly rejects the interruptions of joy and love offered by his beloved three times, but the song still ends with her plea. This Kalmus edition is presented in the original key of B-flat for low voice. Instrumentation: 2+Picc.2+EH.2.2: 4.2.0.0: Timp.Perc(3-4): Hp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Low Voice. | 2800 | 2776AFB0-2B70-4BFF-BBE9-D7C7E061D9DE | A206602 | Concertante Quartet in A minor, Op. 131 | Louis Spohr (1784-1859), a German composer, conductor, and violinist, formed an acquaintance with Beethoven and, although greatly critical of his ninth symphony, promoted much of his work. His innovations include the violin chinrest and the rehearsal mark. From 1822 until the end of his life, at the prompting of Carl Maria von Weber, he served under William II at the court of Kassel. Despite its gloomy opening, the CONCERTANTE QUARTET (STRING QUARTET CONCERTO) in A minor, Op. 131, is a warm and richly melodic work scored for string quartet and orchestra.
