| 13888 | CB80B7F2-20BF-4013-A2F8-D206775D3E08 | A303102 | Cinderella (La Cenerentola, complete) | La Cenerentola (Cinderella) is based on the fairy tale Cendrillon by Charles Perrault. Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) composed La Cenerentola at age 25 following the success of his opera The Barber of Seville. Rossini’s Cinderella follows the traditional fairy tale with a few variations: the wicked stepmother is replaced with a stepfather, Don Magnifico, the Fairy Godmother is replaced with a philosopher and tutor to the prince, Alidoro, and Cinderella is identified by a bracelet instead of a glass slipper. La Cenerentola premiered on January 25, 1817 at the Teatro Valle in Rome and today is considered a staple of the standard repertoire. Writing the libretto himself based on historical sources, Mussorgsky's opera in five acts relates the 1682 rebellion of Prince Ivan Khovansky and the Old Believers against the regent Sofia Alekseyevna and the two young joint Tsars Peter the Great and Ivan V. As the work was almost wholly in piano score format when the composer died, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov undertook to complete, revise, and orchestrate the opera between 1881 and 1882. The world premiere of the Rimsky-Korsakov orchestration took place in St. Petersburg on February 21, 1886, presented by artists of the Russian Opera Society. The piece is a contemplation of the separation from family, friends, and community that everyone was experiencing in some way around the world. The feeling is not just of loneliness, but of being trapped. Staying home for so long, the composer found himself at times pacing around the apartment and staring into space. This music is about that experience. | Solo oboe, Str | |

Originally composed by Joseph M. (Michael) Daly in 1910, the novelty song turned folk song later became used commonly in early animated cartoons to depict farmyard activity. The dance tune was developed into this brilliant concert piece by Leroy Anderson (1908-1975) 1946, with touches of humor and unexpected rhythmical variations, which are the hallmarks of Anderson's musical style. Versions for orchestra and band are available from the publisher. The walking bass line sets the mood as the upper strings trade bluesy riffs. There are a few brief written solos for the principal players, too. It's a short catchy piece that is ideal for programming between more serious works. | String Orchestra | |

| 13895 | CB96D376-0323-41FF-8CA3-C28071937365 | MR00434 | Concerto for Soprano Saxophone and Band | There are three movements in this Concerto. Lively, with humor contrasts the opening material featuring the high register of the saxophone with a more bluesy second theme in the lower part. Serenade follows with a sort of South Seas rhythm-and-blues atmosphere. Shimmy tosses itself between a jazz-type "head" with what customarily follows versus a 1960s early-rock-style hymn with 1930s echoes. These two things together grow into an apotheosis, ending the concerto. | Soprano Sax, Band | |
