Premiered on November 17, 1866 at the Opéra-Comique, it achieved immediate success. The French libretto, based on a novel by Goethe, was written by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré. A revised version in Italian received its first performance at the Drury Lane Theatre in London on July 5, 1870. The plot involves a minstrel named Lothario, reduced to madness by the loss of his daughter to a group of gypsies. The student Wilhelm, after purchasing her freedom, falls in love with her. After Wilhelm rescues her from a burning castle, Lothario learns that Mignon, in fact, is his lost daughter. The overture, here edited by Clinton Nieweg and Nancy Bradburd in a newly-engraved edition, has enjoyed considerable popularity in concert halls. A brief Adagio intervenes and we continue with a slightly fugal, crisply rhythmic Allegro, with 16th note passage work for the upper strings. After another brief Adagio, Handel finishes with a lyric Minuet. All sections are active throughout. This Overture is a wonderful introduction to the Baroque period and the bowing and ornamental styles that go with it. | String Orchestra

On January 30, 1881, he finally started work on the cycle, titled LEGENDS, Op. 59, and Simrock had published it by the middle of the year. Following the release of the piano duet version, Dvo?ák undertook to orchestrate all ten of the movements, which he completed between November and December of that same year. The critic Eduard Hanslick, to whom the work was dedicated, heartily praised it for its contrapuntal design and propulsive freshness. On May 7, 1882, Antonín Bennewitz led the first performance of movements 1, 3, and 4 at the Prague Conservatory and on November 26, Wilhelm Jahn conducted movements 2, 5, and 6 with the Vienna Philharmonic. Unusually, each movement of the work features a different instrumentation. Two publications are available from the publisher: Nos. 1-5 as a set and Nos. 6-10 as another set. It utilizes all extant notated and aural materials for Maria la O for its creation. It was edited 2001-2011 by Dr. Evan Hause. The orchestration in this edition is fully computer-engraved. The percussion parts, mostly unnotated in the original materials, were transcribed and edited for this edition, yet they still allow for the freedom to take a traditional, improvisatory approach to the music as per the original. | Sop.Tenor.Bar.SATB Chorus: 2(2d.Picc).2.2.1: 4.3.2(2.BsTbn).0: Timp.Perc(3-5): Hp: Str

It is more of a concert march than a street march and makes wonderful use of the many voices of the band, from a delightful flute/piccolo melody to a lush low brass statement in which only the brass voices are heard, without constant pulse of percussion. In fact, the percussion parts are particularly wonderful in that they enhance the musical lines of the overall work rather than merely keeping time in typical march fashion. This is a terrific march for any band. | Symphonic Band

Bach's Partita in A minor was composed in 1718 for unaccompanied flute, and his only work in this genre for a solo wind instrument. Extreme demands are made on the performer's stamina; the sixteenth rest at the very outset of the piece might have been intended to be taken in jest as it is the only rest in the entire piece. This work fits nicely under the bassoonist's fingers, and may provide many wonderful hours of discovery into the genius of J.S. Bach. Movements: I. Allemande II. Courante III. Sarabande IV.
