13844CABC7FA1-CC76-46D2-8503-EA97A9939FE6S426CBPerpetual MotionNiccolo Paganini was the most outstanding violinist of his time. The "Perpetual Motion" was originally a movement of a sonata for violin and orchestra. It is generally performed as a piece for violin with piano accompaniment. In the original version, the solo part was written staccato. Since it would be impractical for the solo clarinet to articulate staccato at this tempo, the solo parts have been changed to legato. Additionally, two or more players may be assigned to play both the 1st and 2nd solo clarinet parts.Concert Band
13845CABCA3B8-80A4-40E3-9C0D-8E526FD96FA5SU145Fantasia from I PuritaniLuigi Bassi (1833 - 1871) replaced Ernesto Cavallini as principle clarinet at the La Scala opera house in Milan in 1854. A graduate of the Milan conservatory, Bassi was considered one of the best Italian clarinetists of his day. As was common in nineteenth-century Italy, Bassi's clarinet works are mostly based on opera themes from the great opera composers of his day, Verdi, Bellini, Donizetti, and others. Today, his best-known work is the Concert Fantasia on Movtives from Verdi's opera "Rigoletto", which is but one of the 13 or so opera fantasies that he wrote for clarinet.Clarinet

Beethoven was inspired by this poetry when he composed his cantata of the same name in 1815. The overture begins with a slow introduction depicting the calm sea, then the voyage of the ship as the wind fills its sails and its eventual arrival at the yonder port. The first private performance was heard at the composer’s home on September 8, 1828. Its public premiere took place at a benefit concert in Berlin on December 1, 1832. An 1834 revision is the only surviving version performed today. Instrumentation: 2+Picc.2.2.2+CBsn: 2.3.1.0: Timp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set).2+Picc.2.2.2+CBsn: 2.3.1.0: Timp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set)

As he began to develop an affinity for a colder, stripped-down musical aesthetic, the original instrumentation underwent several changes before its premiere on June 13, 1923 in Paris. Dedicated to Serge Diaghilev, the work is unusually scored for four pianos, four soloists, chorus, and percussion. Its four scenes, performed without break, depict the rituals before and after a wedding ceremony, ending in an effervescent feast. 13860CAF3D3C0-4272-450C-B9F2-78EBCDAC5125S730Espana RhapsodyOriginally, written for orchestra by Chabrier using actual melodies that the composer collected in Spain, a malaguena and ajota aragonesa, this brilliant piece was first arranged for band by Lucien Cailliet in 1964. Cailliet's transcription reflects the trends towards very large band instrumentation that were in vogue at the time, though only originally with a condensed score. In a project to offer a full score, a substantial number of errors and misprints in the instrumental parts were discovered that had never been corrected. This revised transcription allows the substantial number of errors to be corrected while rescoring the transcription to make it more compatible with the practice of contemporary wind bands.Concert Band
