| 1266 | 1131844D-22C0-47AD-91DF-E3E0AEBEB3E4 | A231302 | Cosi fan Tutte, K. 588 (Complete Opera) | Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) wrote the music to COSI FAN TUTTE (So do they all), his third collaboration with librettist Lorenzo da Ponte, only after his contemporaty Antonio Salieri rejected the initial commission. Its first performance took place on January 26, 1790 at the Burgtheater in Vienna, Austria. Despite the strained credibility of the story, in which two men undertake a dare to deceive their lovers through feeble disguise and pretence in order to prove their faithfulness, Mozart enriched its characters with emotional depth, motivation, and humor. Though it took longer to achieve popularity than the other da Ponte operas, by the middle of the twentieth century, Cosi fan tutte had become a staple in opera houses all over the world. Au Cimitiere: Clair de lune (transposed in B) | The song cycle LES NUITS D’ETE (SUMMER NIGHTS) is a setting of six poems by composer Hector Berlioz' (1803-1869) neighbor and friend, Théophile Gautier. The text deals in themes of love in all its facets, progressing from youthful innocence to loss and renewal. Originally composed in 1841 for solo vocalist and piano, Berlioz completed orchestration of each of the six songs in 1856. While regrettably neglected for many years, this song cycle was rediscovered in the 20th century and has become one of the composer's most popular works. The songs in the original keys (1. A; 2. B; 3. F minor; 4. F-sharp; 5. D; 6. F) are available from the publisher both as a complete set (A2573) and individually. Robert Sutherland has edited five of the songs in the cycle and has transposed each in multiple keys to expand the work to more vocalists. Songs completed by Robert Sutherland: 1. Villanelle (E, F, and G), 4. Absence (Db, D, Eb, and E), 5. Au Cimetie?re, Clair de lune (Bb, B, and C), and 6. L'lle inconnue (D, Eb, and E). A transposition of 2. Le Spectre de la rose to D and a transposition of 3. Sur les Lagunes to g minor is also available from the publisher. Au Cimetie?re: Clair de lune (At the Cemetery: Moonlight) is a lament after the death of a beloved, where the bereaved lover has visited the graveyard and is disturbed by a ghostly vision of the past lover. Telling Dvo?ák that she would supply the text (later selecting a poem called "The American Flag"), she suggested that, should she be unable to supply it to him before he left Europe, he should select a Latin Hymn such as 'Te Deum laudamus' or 'Jubilate Deo.' He did precisely this, giving us Te Deum in 1892. With a chorus and operatic solos for soprano and bass, the work adopted the theatricality and drama of Verdi's Requiem and the same solo pairing as Brahms' German Requiem. Movements: 1. Te Deum Laudamus, 2. Tu Rex Gloriae, Christe, 3. Aeterna Fac cum Sanctis, 4. Dignare Domine. Instrumentation: 2.2(1dEH).2.2: 4.2.3.1: Timp.Perc(2-3): Str (4-4-3-3-3 in set): Soli SB: Mix Chor.
