| 1244 | 10E8AE9B-B22D-417D-8881-B126B74A85C2 | SU373 | Incantations | This piece attempts to evoke a magical dialogue between the double bass and percussion performers. The 1st movement uses a pedal point in the bass to focus the pitch content while the tam-tam and suspended cymbal hold together the non-pitched sound. The 2nd movement is a light-hearted scherzo with some percussive effects assigned to the double basses. The 3rd movement features a more lyric line in the double bass with light counterpoint in the percussion. The 4th movement combines 7/8 meter with a dorian melody, bringing the piece to a frenzied close. Percussion instruments include: bass bow, 4 tom-toms, snare drum, 5 temple blocks, 3 wood blocks, 2 suspended cymbals, and tam-tam. | String Bass and Percussion (bass bow, 4 tom-toms, snare drum, 5 temple blocks, 3 wood blocks, 2 suspended cymbals, and tam-tam.) | |

The most prolific opera composer, with 166 operas to his name, he also wrote art songs and music for the church. Published by Novello in 1819 as Mozart’s MASS NO. 12, the work appeared in a Simrock edition for full orchestra in 1821. The mass had grown to enormous popularity by the middle of the nineteenth century. Regardless, Ludwig Köchel rejected the Mozart attribution in his own catalogue. More recently, Müller was brought forth as the probable composer and its likely date of composition between Mozart’s death and the first mention of the mass in a library record in 1803. A rather disjunctive theme in the allegro teaches good bowing skills and offers a wonderful opportunity for a Baroque style lesson. | 1258 | 1115C762-4109-4749-AA19-C56D1A5B5307 | 20502310 | Regimental March and Canon | The title of this trio is a play on words as the regimental march pictures soldiers marching and perhaps firing a canon. However, the canon is a canon in the musical sense. In this piece the three parts are marching along together to the same beat, but all are playing different melodies and rhythms making this a great exercise in independent counting and playing. The 8th notes must be short and crisp, but not chopped, and the quarter notes well separated. Baritone is a good substitute for the trombone, and the second trumpet part can be well played by a French horn with a high range only up to E. A tuba part is also supplied for the possibility of using the trio as a brass choir with multiple players on a part. The optional parts make this a very useful brass trio. | Bb Trumpet 1, Bb Trumpet 2 (F Horn) and Trombone/Euphonium (Tuba) | |
