12584B801DC8C-9C2C-41BD-9CD3-6D1C1463DDEDW107191Five Mystical SongsRalph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) set four poems from George Herbert's (1593-1633) collection The Temple: Sacred Poems in 1911 to music for solo baritone in a work titled Five Mystical Songs. The solo vocalist has several accompaniment choices: piano; piano and string quintet; wind ensemble; and orchestra with optional SATB chorus. It is the last option that Vaughan Williams selected for the work's premiere which took place on September 14, 1911, at the Three Choirs Festival in Worcester, with the composer conducting. The five movements are: 1. Easter (from Herbert's Easter); 2. I Got Me Flowers (from Herbert's Easter); 3. Love Bade Me Welcome (from Herbert's Love [III]); 4. The Call (from Herbert's The Call); and 5. Antiphon (from Herbert's Antiphon [I]). The final movement can be performed by chorus alone or by the soloist alone, with two version in the score and parts to accommodate the preferred approach.Baritone Solo, optional Chorus, and Piano

Inspired in part by his friend Johannes Brahms' new Symphony No. 3, and with a commission from the London Philharmonic Society, Dvo?ák composed a work with his darkest and most passionate content, writing to one of his friends: "Now I am occupied with my new symphony (for London) and wherever I go I have nothing in mind but my work which must be such again as to make a stir in the world, and God grant that it may." This symphony, which shows comparatively few traces of the composer's folk Czech background, was dedicated to the London Philharmonic Society that commissioned it and is sometimes to referred to as the "London Symphony." It was premiered by the London Philharmonic Orchestra in St. James' Hall, Dvo?ák conducting, on April 22, 1885. This Critical Edition based on the composer's manuscript was edited by Otakar Šourek. The Czech Nonet ensemble commissioned the work, giving the first performance on July 27 at the Saltzburg Festival. One of his final compositions, it serves as a wistful time machine back to the folk traditions of the Czech village in which he was born. Scored for a grouping of five winds and four string players, it is constructed in three short movements: 1. Poco Allegro 2. Andante 3. Allegretto. 12592B81FF95C-EBC5-4E64-BE6F-114E1DFF279BA461202Don Carlo (1886 Version in 5 or 4 Acts)This grand opera about love stymied by the political intrigue of Spain during the Inquisition, is well-known for the many versions that have been created to accommodate the work's length. Originally written as a five-act opera with ballet at its French premiere in 1866, the 1867 Italian premiere in London started the trend of making cuts, authorized or not, from the performance, including the omission of both the entire first act and the ballet. Further performances continued to make alterations to shorten the length until Verdi himself decided to address the matter, creating two versions: the 1883 Milan version that omitted Act I and the ballet while also making other smaller cuts, and the 1886 Modena version, which retained Act I, though the ballet was still removed. The four-act Milan version remained the preferred path for performance until a notable 1958 staging of the 1886 five-act Modena version. Both the Milan and Modena versions have grown in popularity since the 1950s, becoming a stardard part of the opera repertoire. This Kalmus edition is the 1886, five-act Modena version, which also notates the optional omission of Act I, offering opera companies flexibility in which version they would prefer to perform.2+Picc.2+EH.2.4: 4.2+2.3.1: Timp.Perc: Hp: Str(4.4.3.3.3): Vocal soli (11 roles, SSSATTTBBBB): Chorus: Banda (0.0.2+D0: 4.2+4+bs.3+2.2)
