Trombone glissandos, barking dogs, and rattling dog tags will make this arrangement a novel and memorable addition to any concert program. | Band | |
95b238b4-9e39-11f0-a418-0022482c9682 | A154502 | Entry March of the Boyars (Bojarenes Inntogsmarsj; Einzugsmarsch der Bojaren; B-flat) | Nowegian composer Johan Halvorsen (1864-1935) composed his ENTRY MARCH OF THE BOYARS in 1893, and it remains his most popular work. Following an offer of a post at the Bucharest Conservatory (which he declined), Halvorsen became very interested in the city. Reading about the 18th century entry of the Romanian boyars into Bucharest, he felt "forced" to write a piece of music about it. Initially used as stage music in 1893 at the Bergen theatre where he was director of music, Halvorsen later arranged it for orchestra. This version of the holiday favorite has been orchestrated and arranged for high voice and orchestra (key of B-flat) by Steve Cohen. | 10247 | 95C3FAA6-4A2F-4869-A4DE-372D3781B26C | M306891 | Sonata No. 1, Op. 33 | Though less-often heard than other later works by this composer, Darius Milhaud's (1892-1974) three-movement SONATA No. 1, Op. 33 offers a look at the composer at his most robust and muscular, although the more gentle sound of contemporary Parisian composers such as Satie, Fauré, and Ravel remain audible in this early work. Movements: I. Décidé (C major/C major); II. Pastorale. Modéré (G lydian mode/G lydian mode); III. Rythmé (C major/C major). Reprint edition of the original version of this work. | Solo Piano |
95C432C5-3FBE-49AE-ACEA-793A57AC1A7C | S828 | Semiramide Overture | This overture comes from one of one Rossini's more serious tragic operas. It is based on Voltaire's "Seriramis", which centers on the Babylonian Queen Semiramide. This arrangement for band by Jim Mahaffey offers fine solo opportunities for either trumpet or euphonium and flute, clarinet, or oboe. | Concert Band |
95C5D2D4-4128-458D-94FD-40699902ADE6 | 10100232 | Winter Evening Song | This is a sensitive, technically simple melody treated in an andante tempo and 3/4 meter. Its sparse scoring, in spots, contrasts nicely with the legato ensemble statements that predominate. Percussion is used to enhance the musicality of the work rather than to serve as a pulse. It is a terrific work to teach elements of musicality. | Concert Band |

95cb0d83-9e3a-11f0-a418-0022482c9682 | A836190 | Joy to the World [orchestration for low voice, B-flat] | JOY TO THE WORLD is the most-published Christmas carol in North America, despite the work not being written for Christmas. The text was written by English minister and hymnist Isaac Watts in 1719. The melody to which the text is set is by American composer Lowell Mason (1792-1872), who saw it published in The Modern Psalmist in 1839, but it seems likely that much of the melodic material was borrowed from G.F. Handel's MESSIAH, but there is still much speculation about the extent. This beloved Christmas carol has been orchestrated and arranged for low voice and orchestra (key of B-flat) by Steven Rosenhaus. The score/parts (A836190) and vocal score (M305991) are available separately. Instrumentation: 2.1.2.2: 2.2.2.0: Timp.Perc(2): Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Low Voice. A version for high voice and orchestra (A836290/M306091) in the key of D is also available from the publisher. | 2.1.2.2: 2.2.2.0: Timp.Perc(2): Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Low Voice |
95CC1B7A-4144-40E3-93CA-B4BB10DEADB9 | SU294CO | Masque and Bacchanalia for Woodwind Quintet and Piano | "Masque and Bacchanalia" for woodwind quintet and piano is a piece in two large sections. While the piece is not precisely programmatic, the first part suggests a stylized masked ball, sometimes grand, sometimes sinister, sometimes playful. In the second part, the stylish ball gives way to an energetic and often raucous gala, wherein earlier themes interact with new material in a jazz-influenced frenzy. The composition is largely tonally centered and intended to be accessible to the listener. In addition to the jazz undertones of the second section, some passages are reminiscent of Stravinsky and Bernstein, while others are incluenced by so-called "process" or "minimalist" techniques. Commissioned by the Oklahoma entry in the Music Teachers National Association's Distinguished Composer of the Year Award and selected as the winning composition. | Woodwind Quintet and Piano |

95D126FE-59B1-4B42-A7D5-19FC3AB01B26 | 20533216 | O Morn of Beauty | One of Sibelius' most popular works is the symphonic poem FINLANDIA. Written in 1899 for a pageant held in association with the press pension celebrations, this work became a nationalist rallying cry for the Finnish people. The event was intended to support freedom of the press during a time when hostility was rising against the Russian tsars who ruled them. The struggle for independence continued until 1917. The work was originally titled FINLAND AWAKES, but was renamed in 1900 as FINLANDIA. This arrangement for four trombones by Dan Rager is taken from the Andante tranquillo section of that orchestral work. | Trombone Quartet |
