It is true that its value as the foundation of the sound of both bands and orchestras somewhat hinders its use melodically, but the instrument possesses a true beauty of tone that should be heard more often. The tuba is capable of exquisite emotional range and sensitivity. It is far more versatile than most would believe and can execute rhythmic passages with surprising agility. This concerto explores these capabilities, placing the instrument above, below, and inside the accompaniment, creating unique sonorities while giving the tuba player the melodies he or she has always wanted to play. Concerto for Tuba was composed for Ronald Bishop, long-time principal tuba of the Cleveland Orchestra. Band, orchestra, and piano accompaniments are all available from the publisher. | Tuba, Full Orchestra

The composition consists of a single movement, but is cast in five distinct sections, each of which derives its material from the four-note motif first heard in the lower instruments during the introduction. The composer has described the style of the music as Neo-Romantic, following the wish of the original soloist. Orchestra version and piano reduction also available from the publisher. | Tuba, band

| 6973 | 666FDF88-121E-4309-8A20-3B145C90C962 | A263002 | Chandos Anthem No. 1: O Be Joyful in the Lord, HWV 246 (Chandos Jubilate; Chrysander) | The CHANDOS ANTHEMS, HWV 246-256, are a collection of eleven anthems composed by George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) when he was composer in residence at Cannons, the court of James Brydges, newly the First Duke of Chandos in 1719. As the chapel was incomplete, Handel wrote these works with fairly intimate scoring, using the instruments he had available to him, which is why they generally do not include viola parts. As a result, the accompaniment for the usually small choirs take on the light texture of chamber music. The text for each of the CHANDOS ANTHEMS are different psalms selected by Handel himself. CHANDOS ANTHEM No. 1: O BE JOYFUL IN THE LORD, HWV 246, also commonly referred to as CHANDOS JUBILATE, was written between 1717 and 1718, and is a setting of Psalms 100. The omission of the alto voices from the chorus and the violas from the orchestra helps to make the work lighter and more similar to chamber music. This edition from the Deutsche Händelgesellschaft has been edited by Friedrich Chrysander. Reprint edition. | Soli STB: Mixed STB Chorus: Hpchd or Pno accomp. | |
