He first wrote the concert overture in E Major, Op. 21 in 1826 at the age of seventeen for no other reason than the love that he and his siblings had for Shakespeare’s stage works. He wrote the incidental music, Op. 61 (likely the best-known incidental music in the repertoire) in 1842 as a commission from King Frederick William IV of Prussia. In creating the complete later version, the composer incorporated the original overture, Op. 21 as the overture for the incidental music and the first of the 14 numbers. Starting with what must be four of the most evocative and memorable chords in music, the work also is the origin of the Wedding March (No. 9) used in so many ceremonies today, commonly referred to as "Here Comes the Bride." The work was premiered in Potsdam, Germany on October 14, 1843 by the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, conducted by the composer. Oberon and Titania introduce the Finale, "Through this house give glimm'ring light", a fairy chorus which, as it recedes into the distance, is followed by Puck's closing soliloquy. The work ends on the same four-chord benediction with which it began. | 5550 | 50D3F4A7-805E-45CD-87FC-FB4C19500CAD | S951CB | Christmas March | Among Goldman’s many contributions to the band’s repertoire, his pastiche marches such as “Children’s March” and the “Christmas March” have been especially popular. Familiar seasonal tunes include Good King Wenceslas, Adeste Fideles, Jingle Bells, It Came Upon the Midnight Clear, The First Noël, Deck the Halls and Hark! the Herald Angels Sing. An optional short coda reduces the playing time to approximately 4:00. A handsome full score and judicious rescoring of the upper woodwinds makes this an ideal alternative for community bands looking for new sounds in a classic, yet familiar style for their December programs. | Concert Band | |

While both songs include French text, the first and more popular song, KADDISCH (Holy), is also in Aramaic, while the second song, L'ÉNIGME ÉTERNELLE (THE ETERNAL RIDDLE), is in Yiddish. Ravel orchestrated both for voice and orchestra in 1920, and many other transcriptions, particularly of KADDISCH, have followed over the years. The tranquil and melodic song has been arranged in multiple ways (all with piano accompaniment) by Floyd O. Harris, all of which are available from the publisher: Alto Saxophone solo, duo, and trio (3rd Alto Saxophone also includes a Tenor Saxophone substitute); Tenor Saxophone solo; Cornet/Trumpet solo, duo, and trio; Trombone/Euphonium/Baritone B.C. solo, duo, and trio.
