33692fa48994-9e3b-11f0-a418-0022482c9682M906202Premiere Rhapsodie for Solo Clarinet and BandGabriel Fauré, then director of the Conservatoire de Paris, named Claude Debussy (1862-1918) to the Conservatoire's board of directors in 1909, and promptly commissioned two works from Debussy for the 1910 clarinet examinations. For the sight-reading portion of the exam, he offered the charming Petite Pièce. But for the core part of the exam, he composed Première Rhapsodie, L. 116, CD. 124, a work that demands great technical skill and musicality from the soloist. The work was dedicated to the professor of clarinet at the Paris Conseratory from 1904-1918, Prospère Mimart, and it was Mimart who premiered the work on January 16, 1911, with M.G. Kriéger at the piano. Quickly recognized as a masterpiece, performances with the piano accompaniment quickly began to appear on programs. Debussy was so pleased with the reception that he orchestrated the piano part in 1911, and the work has remained a staple of the repertoire for clarinet and orchestra since. This transcription for solo clarinet and band has been completed by Donald Miller.Clarinet and Band

Church lived around the time of the Civil War and became known particularly for his striking portrayals of sunsets in the American landscape. The form consists of two main sections connected by an interlude providing both a "macro" and "micro" soundscape which reflects and celebrates Church’s masterful canvas. The libretto is by Arturo Colautti, and it is based on a play by Eugène Scribe and Ernest Legouvé, where some of the characters are based on actual historical figures, although the story itself is fictional. Despite a plot that includes multiple romantic entanglements, unrequited loves, misunderstandings, and murder-by poisoned-violets, the work is considered among the verismo operas, if it is less realistic than others classified as such. The title role has remained a favorite for sopranos with large voices since its premiere, and the opera holds a regular place in the repertoire. The mezzo-soprano aria, "Acerba voluttà, dolce tortura," is sung by the Princess de Bouillon at the beginning of Act II as she anxiously waits for Maurizio to join her at his villa.
