| 3444 | 30A13626-E5C3-47AA-96D1-23F7F18CD646 | A299202 | Boheme, La: Act I, Aria: Che gelida manina (tenor, Db) | LA BOHÈME (THE BOHEMIAN), one of the most beloved and commercially-successful operas, is based on the 1851 novel Scenes of Bohemian Life by Henri Murger. With a libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) worked on it from 1893 to 1895. It first appeared at the Teatro Regio in Turin on February 1, 1896, conducted by 28-year-old Arturo Toscanini. Weighed negatively against Turin's recent Italian premiere of the Wagner opera GOTTERDAMMERUNG, it received a lukewarm response from audience and critics. A few months later, concertgoers filled opera houses on both sides of the Atlantic to hear it. In Act I, Rodolfo the painter has just met Mimi in the darkness of his garret while trying to look for a key she has lost. Their hands meet in the gloom; singing CHE GELIDA MANINA, he introduces himself as a poet, poor in circumstance, but whose dreams of love make him a millionaire at heart. | 3454 | 30B4F9FE-4EB1-4DD1-8EF3-3D3D7A513AB2 | X652715 | Portraits for Flute, Clarinet, Violin, Violoncello, and Piano | Bruce Adolphe wrote of this piece, "Scored for the Da Capo Chamber Players (flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano), PORTRAITS is a series of tributes to the memories of musicians who were close to me, as well as to the players of Da Capo. The portraits are of: Nicholas Maw; Milton Babbitt; David Golub; George Perle; Laura Flax. For the composers, I incorporated aspects of their musical personalities into their tributes; for the tribute to pianist David Golub, I created a portrait based on a Schubert impromptu that he frequently played as an encore; for the clarinetist Laura Flax, who was a longtime member of Da Capo, I composed a movement in which the clarinet is the soloist, in an intimate meditation that brings the entire work to a close. This is a deeply personal project, but one that I hope will speak to the larger musical community, many of whom who knew and loved these musicians." | "Pierrot Ensemble": Flute, Clarinet, Violin, Cello, Piano | |

| 3458 | 30C825B9-EE4E-421E-9808-94DAD00BAC52 | S722 | Crown of Thorns | A tone poem that describes in musical terms Jesus Christ's journey from the Last Supper, through the betrayal of Judas Iscariot, the abjuction by the Roman soldiers, the judgement under Pontious Pilate, the crown of thorns, and the procession to the cross, culminating in the Ascension into heaven. Though modern compositional devises are used, the piece attempts to remain true to the musical sounds that might have been heard in Biblical times. The music is highly programmatic in nature, and many listeners may recognize elements of the story. | Concert Band | |
