| 3465 | 30E001C2-22B9-4A44-AD2B-31B07DD18017 | S1018CB | Belle of the Ball for Band - Second Edition | Like most of Leroy Anderson’s efforts, Belle of the Ball is light, effervescent, and devoid of conflict or disharmony. Anderson looked upon the piece as a modern-day American revival -- or revitalization -- of the Viennese waltz tradition. Having said that, the main theme sounds rather unlike a Strauss waltz, but the voice of Tchaikovsky is evident in its playful, fantasy-like character. The melody is rhythmic and comes in short groups of notes, beginning with two notes, then three, then expanding further; the music skates along elegantly. The middle section features a delightful variation on the theme, in which Anderson’s gentle belled sonorities impart a playful innocence. This exclusive Southern band edition by Mark Rogers reintroduces Anderson’s enchanting work to new generations of audiences. | Concert Band | |

Lush and romantic in sound, it has passages of pizzicato and harmonics (first violin only). The emphasis is on shifting expressively with just enough other challenges to make this a concert highlight. | String Orchestra | |

They were not conceived of as a cycle, with each song only connected by the poet Friedrich Rückert and the themes. But they were published together, first as SIEBEN LIEDER AUS LETZTER ZEIT (SEVEN SONGS OF LATTER DAYS) with two additional Mahler songs, then with only the five songs. They have simply come to be known as Rückert-Lieder and are now most frequently performed together, although Mahler did set other Rückert poems aside from these five. The third song, ICH BIN DER WELT ABHANDEN GEKOMMEN (I AM LOST TO THE WORLD), transposed to the key of F in this version for high voice, distills the lonely plight of the artist forgotten by the world but finding solace in art and introspection. Upon reflection, Mahler once declared, “It is truly me.” Instrumentation: 0.1+EH.2.2: 2.0.0.0: Hp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Low Voice. | 3476 | 3100945A-9352-4898-BD06-B7E961C5BDFB | A508302 | I Vespri Siciliani: Act V, No. 14; Chorus and Siciliana: Merce, dilette amiche (soprano) | The first performance of I Vespri Siciliani (The Sicilian Vespers), a five-act opera by Guiseppe Verdi (1813-1901), took place at the Paris Opera on June 13, 1855, under the direction of Narcisse Girard. Verdi set to music an adaptation of a libretto originally intended for Donizetti, called "The Duke of Alba", based on the 16th-century Spanish tyrant but replacing the earliest Dutch setting with a Sicilian one. When it was first performed in Italy, the text was changed under the title "Giovanna de Guzman" to satisfy the Italian censors. In 1860, it returned to its original title with a new translation. Although not as frequently performed today, it achieved great success with both audiences and critics. Elena (Hélène) sings the Siciliana "Mercè, dilette amiche" ("Thank you, beloved friends") before her marriage to Henri, transforming wedding flowers into a metaphor for the joyful sensations of her Sicilian motherland. This is preceded by the chorus "Si celebri alfine tra canti" ("It is celebrated at the end among the songs").
