Play the finale with determination and excitement. It would be possible to use an oboe instead of the flute on the first part, although the range up to high D might be prohibitive unless the oboe player is sufficiently accomplished. Keys are B-flat major and G minor. A. Hoffmann's 1816 short story, "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King," the original 1892 production, choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov in Saint Petersburg, was not considered a success, although the 20-minute suite extracted by the composer was. Starting in the 1960s, the popularity of the full ballet has grown enormously, with frequent performances every Christmas season among the major ballet companies. The Pas de Deux is the well-known dance for the Sugar Plum Fairy. Includes a cadenza written by Thomas Tirino, and reflects his 1996 premiere recording on Bis Records. Composed in 1955, the work has been conceived both for Two Pianos (unpublished) and for Piano and Orchestra. Inspired by the ballad Der wilde Jäger (The Wild Hunter) by German poet Gottfried August Bürger, the work tells the story of a Count of the Rhine, who breaks the Sabbath to go hunting. He is then cursed to be chased by demons for all eternity. Completed in October of 1882, Le Chasseur maudit premiered in March of 1883 at the Salle Érard in a concert of the Société Nationale de Musique under the baton of Édouard Colonne.
