20311CCD5B20-A953-4C11-B54F-F13C99677D9760761001Escales (Ports of Call), IJI 18 for Piano 4 HandsWhen Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) won the Prix de Rome in 1922, he was asked to send back musical fruits of his residency. As a result, he devised a three-movement musical voyage, Escales (Ports of Call) for orchestra. The piece captures the route he took during his honeymoon with his wife Rose-Marie Veber, but in reverse: Rome to Palermo, then Tunis to Nefta, then finally, the port of Valencia. The piece premiered on January 6, 1924 with the Orchestre Lamoureux under the direction of Paul Paray. It remains his most frequently performed work. This version for piano 4-hands was transcribed by the composer. Reprint edition.Piano 4-hands
20321CD62F66-E169-4CF8-953A-78416B0BB639B538Three Grand Artistic DuetsErnesto Cavallini was not only the preeminent clarinet virtuoso of his day, but he was also a significant composer of solo clarinet music. In addition to his many solos, most of which are based on opera themes, Cavallini composed these "Three Artistic Duets" and another set of "Six Grand Duos" (also available from the publisher.) These duets fall neatly under the fingers and are florid and musically substantial, with difficulty and interest divided equally between the two parts. This edition by David Hite remedies issues in earlier versions such as errors and inconsistencies in articulation and very limited dynamic and metronomic indications. It also alleviates crowding and difficult page turns, making the music easier to read. You will find these duets a pleasure to play, either as a reading challenge or as music for more in depth study, and they are entertaining for both the performers and the listener. Certainly, they would be a welcome addition to any recital program, with each duet lasting approximately 20 minutes.Clarinet Duet

The opera was originally titled Violetta, after the main character. Piave and Verdi wanted to follow Dumas in giving the opera a contemporary setting, but the authorities at La Fenice insisted that it be set in the past, ca. 1700. It was not until the 1880’s that the composer’s and librettist’s original wishes were carried out and “realistic” productions were staged. La Traviata has become immensely popular and is among the most frequently performed of all operas. This excerpt from Act II is from The Chorus of Spanish Matadors. 20341CDD11AC-32F1-4184-A1C1-066D7B726BB0A933490Lark Ascending, The for Violin and OrchestraRalph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958), ever fond of poetry, found creative impetus for his beautiful romance THE LARK ASCENDING, IRV 38, in an 1881 poem by George Meredith. Marie Pauline Hall, to whom the work was dedicated, gave the first performance of the original violin and piano version at Shirehampton Public Hall on December 15, 1920, beside pianist Geoffrey Mendham. Later Vaughan Williams expanded the work for full orchestra and it was again premiered by Hall on June 14, 1921. This has become the version most familiar to listeners. The violin, lifting its silvery tones above the stage, captures the soaring nature of Meredith’s couplet: “Till lost on his aerial rings/In light, and then the fancy sings.” This version can be played by full orchestra or chamber orchestra by reducing the winds to one per part. Instrumentation: Solo Vn: 2.1.2.2: 2.0.0.0: Perc(1): Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set). Reprint edition with transposed clarinet parts also included. Legato playing is necessary for the proper interpretation of "Aura Lee," and "Dixie" should be played in a light but energetic staccato-marcato. An excellent piece for concert of contest!
