MELANCHOLY MOOD: Marian's former husband, cornettist Jimmy McPartland, gets part of the credit for this tune. "I wrote it years ago. That first phrase came from something Jimmy used to play when he was practicing. So I consider him co-composer. After I played it on the piano, the rest of the tune just fell into place." 15247E01E4932-E3BD-4708-87EB-D2B35BD6F5CEEBM4003586Four Winds, TheThe Four Winds is an homage by the composer to some of the well-known band composers, such as Clifton Williams and John Barnes Chance, as well as earlier wind masters like Holst and Mahler. Evan Hause was a student of William Bolcom, and his more advanced band work, Tango Variations, has been performed and recorded by some of the top university ensembles. This fantasy-overture is appropriate for the intermediate high school band, contrasting brisk fanfare music with variations on a Romantic theme. (Grade 4) Dur: 6:00Concert band

15249E024596C-2B7B-4599-9F5B-28BD2C00EAB1A277302Carmen: Act III (No. 22), Micaela's Air: Je dis, que rien ne m'epouvanteWhile it scandalized Parisian audiences at its premiere by the Opéra-Comique in Paris on March 3rd, 1875, Georges Bizet’s (1838-1875) CARMEN became, a mere decade later, one of the most popular and frequently performed operas in the repertoire. It remains popular today, with songs such as the Habanera and Toreador Song among the best known of all opera arias. "Micaela’s Air" (Je dis que rien ne m’épouvante) appears in Act III as the young village girl searches for Don José in the mountains. Alone and fearful of the smugglers who surround her, Micaela gathers her courage through prayer, asking God to give her strength to confront Carmen and rescue José from her influence. The aria contrasts Micaela’s purity and innocence with Carmen’s fiery sensuality, highlighting her steadfast devotion and quiet bravery. Lyrical, tender, and imbued with heartfelt sincerity, it provides one of the opera’s most poignant and touching moments, offering a glimpse of moral clarity amid the drama’s turbulence. 15255E030E7A6-9C44-4CAD-BC48-70298F5EAA10A454302Symphony for Strings in E minorThe STRING QUARTET IN E MINOR by Guiseppe Verdi (1813-1901) was composed in 1873, one year before his REQUIEM MASS. It was written in his Naples hotel room while awaiting the continuation of rehearsals for the performance of AIDA. The integrity of phrasing and articulation of the Urtext edition has been respected in this setting. It is hoped that this string orchestra version focuses more attention on Verdi's single contribution to the chamber music literature.String Orchestra (8-8-5-5-5 in set)
