Completing the work between May and August 1902, he revised the work in 1903. The dedication on the manuscript to Hugo Boettinger is a humorous one, as the former violin pupil did not, in the end, achieve any notable degree of skill from his brief tutelage with Suk. The Czech Philharmonic gave the premiere at the Rudolfinum in Prague on January 9, 1904, Oskar Nedbal conducting. Cast in a single movement, it eschews the term “concerto” and follows, rather, the concert fantasy tradition of the previous century while treading new expressive ground that demonstrates a departure from the influence of Dvorák and Brahms. The three songs are: 1. An sie (To Them; text by Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock); 2. Muttertändelei (Mother Chatter; text by Gottfried August Bürger); 3. Die Ulme zu Hirsau (The Elm of Hirsau; text by Ludwig Uhland). Muttertändelei has become the more popular of the three, depicting a deliriously happy new mother who would not give her child away "for all the coins in the world." The ebullient and perky song makes sudden, unexpected harmonic modulations, all set to the comic text by Gottfried August Bürger (1747-1794). Strauss orchestrated the accompaniment in 1911 in the original key of F. A version was later transposed to E major. Both keys are available from the publisher. Based on a love story with elements from Slovakian folklore and Indian poetry, the original music included vocal solos and choruses. Adolf ?ech conducted the first performance on June 6, 1898 at the National Theatre in Prague. Realizing that the theatrical work would receive few subsequent performances, Suk developed the material into a four-movement suite for orchestra, POHÁDKA SUITE, Op. 16. The Czech Philharmonic premiered the suite at Rudolfinum, Prague on February 7, 1901 under the direction of Oskar Nedbal. 13299C260C249-B8DD-4835-B2E7-720498943FEAM342591Andante and Rondo, Op.25Albert Franz Doppler (1821 - 1883) was a flute virtuoso and a composer best known for his flute music. Taught by his composer and oboist father, Joseph, Franz made his Vienna debut as a flutist at the age of 13 and embarked on several concert tours, often accompanied by his younger brother Karl, also a highly accomplished flutist and composer. This playful ANDANTE ET RONDO, Op. 25, was composed to showcase the talents of the Doppler brothers during one of their many tours, and it remains a favorite duet for flutists today. A flashy showpiece, the long melody of the Andante sweeps and soars in a dramatic fashion with rich harmonies in the two flutes, while the Rondo features complex rhythmic layers, and has the cheek and drive of a Hungarian gypsy dance. Reprint edition of this charming Romantic work. Two Flutes and Piano
