In 1850, Brahms was introduced to “gypsy-style” music through Hungarian violinist Ede Reményi, including the csárdás “Bártfai emlék” (Memories of Bártfa) by Hungarian composer Béla Kéler, which became the basis for Hungarian Dance No. 5. Arranged for many different instruments and ensembles over the years, this orchestration of Nos. 1, 3, and 10 is the composer's original. | 12974 | BD7AFBD1-36D2-4D1E-BF41-57BB7757A279 | A546202 | Suite Algerienne, Op. 60: Marche Militaire Francaise | The Suite Algérienne, Op. 60, sparked by a trip that Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) took to Algeria in 1873, debuted in Paris in December 1880 with Edouard Colonne conducting. For the rest of his life, the composer nurtured a deep appreciation for the country which inspired the work. The fourth movement, Marche militaire française, has become popular with audiences. Its patriotic energy, contrasted with the exoticism of the last three movements, serves as a time capsule of occupied Algeria and the feelings of security that the composer felt on meeting French troops and other sights that reminded him of his homeland. Salvadore Cammarano wrote the Italian-language libretto loosely based upon Sir Walter Scott’s 1819 historical novel, THE BRIDE OF LAMMERMOOR. Donizetti wrote the opera in 1835, shortly after Gioachino Rossini had retired and Vincenzo Bellini had died, leaving him the only Italian opera composer of genius still working. That, coupled with the interest in the culture and history of Scotland that is the focus of the story, led to the steady success that the work received. It premiered on September 26th, 1835 at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples. In the Act I, Scene 2 aria REGNAVA NEL SILENZIO, Lucia tells her handmaid Alisa that she saw the ghost of a girl who was killed by a jealous ancestor of the man she adores. It was influenced, as its title suggests, but the commedia del 'arte (albeit distrantly) - the stock characters tossed against eachother in a variety of situations, often comic, but, as evidenced in the paintings of a Longhi or a Magnasco, not without a dark side. Much of the piece consists of a tarantella or saltarello in fast 6/8 time. Commissioned by the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and premiered by the orchestra under Sydney Hodkinson in March, 1972. | 2.2.1.2: 2(or4).0.0.0: Timp(ad.lib): Pno: Str.Soli (1.1.0.1),Tutti | |

| 12980 | BD9AF343-37BB-4AE9-ACFD-2A7FAEDD48CD | A219602 | Concerto for Violin in D, Op. 35 | Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) originally dedicated his CONCERTO FOR VIOLIN in D, Op. 35, to Leopold Auer. The Hungarian violinist concluded that it was too difficult. The concerto finally premiered on December 4, 1881, Adolph Brodsky performing the solo part with the Vienna Philharmonic under the direction of Hans Richter. Influential 18th century music critic Eduard Hanslick’s complaint about the length of the concerto gradually succumbed to its growing reputation as a challenging yet irresistibly melodic touchstone for aspiring violinists all over the world.
