11642AA6907C3-9FEC-43E8-9167-6CCFDF2A7A68W107091Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth)Fresh from the loss of his oldest daughter Maria Mahler, and knowing he had a serious heart condition, Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) crafted Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth) in the years 1908 and 1909. The first performance took place on November 20, 1911 at the Tonhalle in Munich, conducted by Bruno Walter. It encompasses six settings of old Chinese poems, four of them by the Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai, loosely translated into German by Hans Bethge. Conscious of his own mortality, Mahler filled his orchestral song cycle with themes of resignation, fading beauty, and autumn loneliness. The last song, roughly the same length as the previous five movements combined, serves as a sprawling, yet deeply personal farewell to both love and life. Reprint edition of the vocal score by Erwin Stein. Movements: 1. Das Trinklied vom Jammer der Erde (The Drinking Song of Earth's Sorrow); 2. Der Einsame im Herbst (Autumn Loneliness); 3. Von der Jugend (Youth); 4. Von der Schönheit (Beauty); 5. Der Trunkene im Fruhling (Wine in Spring); 6. Der Abschied (The Farewell).Soli T, A (or Bar) and Piano

A keeper of the peace may be a soldier or a police officer, but more importantly, it is those around us, our family and friends who look out for us, our minds, and our bodies.Concert Band

Completing it on December 6, he dispensed with the usual minuet and trio. To fill out the three-movement structure, he added one of the most expansive slow introductions that had yet been written for a symphony. It is frequently called the "PRAGUE" since its premiere took place in the midst of his first trip to the Bohemian city on January 19, 1787. 11651AA8DE677-39CE-45F3-8B25-E10D5110B507A236302Roumanian Rhapsody Op. 11, No. 1 in A MajorRomanian composer, violinist, and conductor George Enescu (1881-1955) (Fr. Georges Enesco) wrote the two Roumanian (Romanian) Rhapsodies, Op. 11, in 1901. Much like Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsodies, both works deliver the improvisatory feel that one expects when listening to a "rhapsody," although Enescu's incorporates many Romanian folk elements into his work. With only 33 published works to his name, a low number compared to other composers due to Enescu's career as a performer and his extreme perfectionism, these Roumanian Rhapsodies, particularly No. 1, are his best-known works, a fact that Enescu resented a bit given that he thought his later works more mature. Despite this, most consider the rhapsodies to be deserving of their place in the orchestral repertoire. Both premiered together on March 8, 1903, in Bucharest by the Romanian Athenaeum Orchestra, Enescu conducting. Romanian Rhapsody No. 1 in A Major is the better known of the two. Ebullient in nature, it incorporates several Romanian folk dances. It is popular in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Ireland, although the text is set to different tune. The version most popular in the United States happens to have been written by Brooks' organist, Lewis H. Redner (1831-1908), who titled the tune "St. Louis" after rushing to set the newly written text to music in time for the Christmas mass. This arrangement for orchestra has been completed by Arthur Harris and is part of the Arthur Harris Christmas Series.
