| 2270 | 1FF7A807-4843-42FC-80E0-CE301C0B4C10 | A201802 | Symphony No. 2 in C, Op. 61 | Robert Schumann's (1810-1856) Symphony No. 2 in C, Op. 61 was sketched quickly in 1845, but depression and ringing in his ears prevented Schumann from completing the orchestration until later in 1846. While the work was published as his second symphony, it was actually the third he had written. The premiere took place on November 5, 1846, at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, Felix Mendelssohn conducting, but the work was not well received. In an uncommon move, Mendelssohn agreed to a second performance only two weeks later after Schumann made heavy changes to the orchestration, including the addition of trombones. This second performance of the revised symphony proved much more successful. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 2.2.3.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set). | 2.2.2.2: 2.2.3.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set) | |

Four concertini, each featuring a different instrumental family within the chamber orchestra, are played in succession to demonstrate the characteristic sounds of those instruments. The music is thematically related but not identical to the Concertino for Chamber Orchestra (parts available on rental from the publisher), which serves as the program's closer, demonstrating all of the orchestral sections playing together. This program is suggested by the composer for orchestra concerts, however this concertino can be performed individually to great effect as a short concert opener. | 1.1.1.1: 1.1.1.0: Perc(1): Str | |

The first idea of writing the symphony came to him while he was visiting the ruins of Holyrood Chapel in Edinburg. The symphony finally reached its completion in 1842, the work premiered on March 3 at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig. It was his last finished symphony, although only the third to achieve publication. Its majestic opening movement and lively scherzo have conjured for audiences rugged northern landscapes and allusions of Scottish folk music.
