Originally, he and his librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal collaborated on a one-act opera based on Moliére’s play Le bourgeois gentilhomme, the initial version of Ariadne auf Naxos. Following an unsuccessful production in Stuttgart on October 25, 1912, they realized that the opera was too long and financially impractical. After the better-received appearance of the 1916 version, in which they had decided to cut the incidental music to the Moliere play, Hofmannsthal urged Strauss to rework it into the musical comedy DER BÜRGER ALS EDELMANN. This wartime production suffered a lukewarm reception when it premiered in Stuttgart in 1918. Two years later, Strauss gathered several extracts of music from the opera into a suite for orchestra which found a warm reception when he himself conducted the Vienna premiere on January 31, 1920. | 2225 | 1F24FDC2-EA93-4416-A690-DEAFFD32CE1E | 52730476 | Six Suites, BWV 1007-1012 | This edition of Bach's Six Suites is appealing to both the scholar and the performer. The genesis of this edition was the alignment of the relevant manuscripts for easy comparison and study using a line by line layout. It has resulted in the ultimate scholarly approach to the study of these manuscripts and has led to many discoveries concerning notes, trills, dots, dynamics, and rhythm. In the scordatura version of Suite 5, pitch names are given above the notes for the retuned top string, clarifying confusing elements in the notation. Fingerings and bowings in this edition reflect those used on the DVD set of Starkweather's performance of the suites. Reference to the Manuscript Edition makes it possible to visually assess the ambiguity of many of the slurs and to reach one's own conclusions. | Cello Solo | |

| 2232 | 1F3D1A85-BE3F-4E20-980C-1DD4BE85366C | 20532417 | Stephen Foster Songs | Stephen Collins Foster (1826-1864) composed over 175 songs which have become America's folk songs because they express in melody and lyrics the 19th century life of the common man. Many of his songs were written for minstrel shows as is the case with the first song in this suite 'Ring, Ring the Banjo'. 'Old Folks At Home' is the best known of all of his songs, and 'Oh, Susanna' became an immediate hit. It was picked up by the forty-niners and sung all the way to California by those involved in the gold rush. These three pieces contrast in style and make use of the glissando, a trademark of trombone playing in the minstrel style. Range is between high F and F below the staff. This is an outstanding addition to chamber music for the trombone. | Trombone or Euphonium Trio | |
