| 1002 | 0DDE3D03-2712-4661-BD21-968FB82EF0B2 | S912CB | The Last Days of Pompeii | Sousa's suite for concert band "The Last Days of Pompeii" was inspired by the novel of the same name by Edward Bulwer-Lytton, with each of the three movements prefaced by a quotation drawn from the novel. This suite was composed in 1893, and was the composer's first essay into the form that was to become his preferred means of musical expression in large structure. Sousa often reffered to this as his finest composition and programmed it more often than any of his other suites. This edition reflects the instrumentation as it was in the Sousa Band's later years as it more closely resembles contemporary performance practice, and it is offered to conductors who wish to explore the wind band's earliest surviving repertory. Movements: 1. In the House of Burbo and Stratonice, 2. Nydia, the Blind Girl, 3. The Destruction of Pompeii and Nydia's Death. | Concert Band | |

S’vivon literally means spinning or dreidel, while Hanukkah, O Hanukkah is about the traditions of Hanukkah mentioned above. Shed a Sweet Light in E Minor explores mixed meters of 2/4 and 4/4, pizzicato, arco, and slurred 1/16 notes at a Level 3. Cleo Goldberg passes the melody around the orchestra as the audience shares in the happiness of Shed a Sweet Light, a wonderful addition to your holiday string orchestra repertoire. | String Orchestra

Vivaldi even published the concerti with accompanyting sonnets that made clear what in each season the music was meant to invoke. While the other three concerti are wholly original, "Spring" actually borrows patterns from Vivaldi's sinfonia in the first act of his opera IL GIUSTINO. Much of the Sextet for Piano and Winds is based on and inspired by sub-Saharan African music, using many of the same techniques used in the composer’s Second Piano Trio and Piano Concerto for the Left Hand. The first two movements are built on a 51-note melody and techniques of mbira music and related singing. The latter two movements employ the technique of change ringing (permutations of a given number of notes or bells) to provide constantly varying melodic repetitions. | Woodwind quintet, piano
