Much of the Sextet for Piano and Winds is based on and inspired by sub-Saharan African music, using many of the same techniques used in the composer’s Second Piano Trio and Piano Concerto for the Left Hand. The first two movements are built on a 51-note melody and techniques of mbira music and related singing. The latter two movements employ the technique of change ringing (permutations of a given number of notes or bells) to provide constantly varying melodic repetitions. |
