The title of the piece refers to a specific type of locomotive with a 2-3-1 axle arrangement. Its five sections evoke a train trip in progress, beginning with the train standing still, then starting, accelerating, reaching maximum speed, and decelerating and stopping. PACIFIC 231 premiered on May 8, 1924 in Paris. Instrumentation: 2+Picc.2+EH.2+BCl.2+CBsn: 4.3.3.1: Perc(3-4): Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set). Using the Lydian mode in several transpositions, the work contrasts shifting meters and syncopated rhythms with lyrical melodies superimposed over driving eighth note rhythms. The overall effect is one of charged energy. | String Orchestra | |

| 5364 | 4DBE1AC6-CB73-49F3-8871-57A8E2B15DA8 | S512003 | 12 Duets for Two Violins, Vol. 1 | This edition of the TWELVE DUETS FOR TWO VIOLINS by Mozart is based on the 1798 edition by J.André in O?enbach and the 1800 edition by Artaria & Co. in Vienna. These duets are masterful adaptations of Mozart’s original settings; (piano sonatas, violin - piano duets, a string quartet and the CLARINET TRIO). Unfortunately, the identities of these eighteenth century transcribers are unknown. Judging by their expert handling of the original material, they belonged to Mozart’s inner circle and most likely were his disciples. While maintaining Mozart’s original phrasing, this edition includes contemporary bowings and ?ngerings. Included in Volume 1: 1. Duet for Two Violins in B ?at Major K 378; 2. Duet for Two Violins in F Major K 376; 3. Duet for Two Violins in G Major K 379. | Violin Duo | |

Its three movements are Rome-Palermo, which conjures southern Italy with tarantella rhythms; Tunis-Nefta, which quotes a folk tune the composer heard in the Tunisian desert, and the Spanish music-inspired Valencia. Written during his residency after winning the Prix de Rome, ESCALES remains one of Ibert’s most performed pieces today. It premiered in Paris in January 1924.
