The composition was dedicated to Standard Oil heiress Ann Archbold, who kindly housed the Babins in her Hillandale mansion in Washington, D.C., near Georgetown University. The work was subtitled "Eight Waltz Movements Composed on a Theme by Johann N. Hummel." Hummel used this melody twice in both a piano duet and a work for oboe and orchestra. The Babins were very familiar with the former piece, having frequently performed it. This arrangement for clarinet and piano was edited and arranged by American clarinetist Dennis Nygren. Dr. Nygren has also arranged "Hillandale Waltzes" for solo clarinet, 16 winds, double bass, and percussion, which is also available from LudwigMasters Publications (item #50160005). | Clarinet and Piano

Compositionally, he is best known for three sets of 42 concerti grossi (a term made famous by Corelli): Opus 2 (1732), Opus 3 (1733) and Opus 7 (1746). These were written for an English audience excited by the 'Corellian' style, despite the rest of Europe then adopting the fashionable galant style. These concerti grossi proved very popular on performance and were published quickly in London. The collection of Six Concertos (Concerti Grossi), Op. 2 were written first in 1732, but were revised by Geminiani in 1755. This edition of Concerto Grosso in D, Op. 2, No. 4 has been edited by Hans Joachim Moser, and it features combined ripieno and concertante string parts (4-4-3-3-3* in the set) into each instrument part and a realized cembalo/harpsichord continuo. (*The bass was included in the work, but extra violoncello parts are included should orchestras wish to have basses double the cello.) | (Ripieno/Concertante parts combined): Str (4-4-3-3-3* in set): Concertante: Vn(2).Va.Vc: Hpchd in set (*The bass was included in the work, but extra violoncello parts are included should orchestras wish to have basses double the cello.)

Boyd's setting is not a simple rehashing of the famous Ravel orchestration, as Boyd remains more faithful to the bold musical language of Mussorgsky's original composition. This exciting work fits the bill for better high school and college bands, yet is substantial enough to meet the needs of professional organizations as well. The work is available in its entirety with all seven sections and the score included at a value-minded price, or each of the individual sections may be ordered individually as a set of parts only and the complete score (10105314) may be purchased separately should only certain sections be of interest. The sections include: Part 1: Promenade; Gnomus-Gnomus. Part 2: Promenade; Il Vecchio Castello.Part 3: Promenade; Tuileries; Bydlo. Part 4: Promenade; Ballet Of The Chicks In Their Shells; Two Jews, One Rich, The Other Poor; Promenade. Part 5: Limoges-The Market Place; Catacombae; Cum Mortuis In Lingua Mortua. Their exclusive use of black horses was the inspiration for the title. Troop A, once known as the First City Troop of Cleveland, was originally an independent militia group and has had a long, distinguished history since its formation in 1877. Sousa’s most noteworthy association with the troop came in 1898. The Sousa Band, having arrived in Cleveland just as the troop was preparing to leave for the Spanish-American War, marched in a parade escorting them from the Armory to the train depot. His first association was much earlier, however. As leader of the U.S. Marine Band in 1881, he marched with the organization in the funeral cortege of President James A. Garfield. | Marching Band
