The successful 1996 premiere led to the composer making additional versions of the solo part for F horn and alto saxophone, with piano reductions for all three instruments and an arrangement with string orchestra accompaniment. The work is comprised of four movements, each based on a combination of English folk melodies: I. Early One Morning, II. Green Bushes, III. I'll Love My Love, IV. The Wraggle-Taggle Gypsies. Completing it on February 10, 1785, he performed the solo part for its premiere at the Mehlgrube Casino in Vienna the next day. He was unable to finish the last movement due to the time it took to supervise the copying of the parts beforehand. After his death, the concerto made an impression on the young Beethoven, who wrote two cadenzas which are frequently heard in modern interpretations of the work. Its restless energy and pathos made it popular with 19th century audiences. Initially based on Eugène Scribe’s libretto for Daniel Auber’s 1833 five act opera Gustave III, ou Le bal masqué about the assassination in 1792 of King Gustav III of Sweden who was shot while attending a masked ball, Verdi’s version ran afoul of numerous censorship regulations in Naples, Rome, and France. As a result, the opera underwent a series of significant transformations and title changes, among which include the eventual change in setting from Stockholm, Sweden to Boston, Massachusetts during the colonial era. Taking over two years from commission to production, it became one of the most frustrating experiences of Verdi’s career. The opera is now a regular part of the opera repertory. Composed between 1863 and 1866, it was not immediately successful following its 1866 premiere at the Provisional Theatre in Prague on May 30. Performed in its final version, four years later, it achieved worldwide popularity. Set in a country village, the plot follows Jeník and his lover Marenka, opposing her parents who have a scheme to marry her off to the son of a rich landowner. In the Act 3 trio "He’s blessed, so blessed who loves," Jeník and Marenka contend with the marriage broker. Choreographed by Louis Mérante, with scenery by Jules Chéret, it premiered on June 14, 1876, at the new Opera Garnier in Paris. Commercially unsuccessful, it achieved a triumphant revival in 1952 and has since become one of the most-performed ballets in the repertoire. This suite produced in 1880 includes four of the movements from the complete ballet: 1. Prélude - Les Chasseresses; 2. Intermezzo et Valse lente; 3. Pizzicati; 4. Cortège de Bacchus.
