| Program Notes | The poet referred to in the title is the early 20th century German poet, Rainer Maria Rilke. He had a visionary experience that shook the foundations of his being, in which he experienced an overwhelming love of God, a profound sense of order regarding all life in the universe, and deep compassion, as well as a sense of the power of his poetry to heal. This represented by the first poem of his DAS STUNDENBUCH (THE BOOK OF HOURS--LOVE SONGS TO GOD). In the music, the poetry is represented by the mood of the Exposition which is preceded by an introductory section of a radically contrasting mood, entitled Prologue: "Eternal Parting". In the rest of the work there is a confrontation and Development of the ideas of the first two sections, and a final statement of Synthesis (which is dominated by the strings alone, adagio espressivo). In the final analysis, programmatic ideas serve as signposts for entry into the life a musical work has on its own, and all types of verbal description fall short, as a composer is driven to create and fashion a metaphor for the life of the human soul. -notes by Michael Mathis |
