| Long Bio | Karl Davidov (Carl, Charles Davidoff, Davydoff, Davydov, 1838-1889) was a Russian composer (mainly for the cello) and cellist, who was described by P. Tchaikovsky as "czar of cellists".
He studied in Leipzig Conservatory and became full time cellist in 1850. He later became head of St Petersburg Conservatory and had many students.
In 1870 Count Wilhorsky, a patron of the arts, presented Davydov with a Stradivarius cello constructed in 1712. This cello, now known as the Davidov Stradivarius, was owned by Jacqueline du Pré until her death and is currently on loan to cellist Yo-Yo Ma. So now we know the history of Yo-Yo Ma's cello.
The work I sent you has original name "Romance sans Paroles" - Romance without words and originally was written by Davidoff for Cello and Piano.
Then L. Auer made a transcription for Violin and Piano which was published in Leipzig by Fr. Kistner.
In this edition the name of this work is "Romance" and I decided to keep it this way assuming that L. Auer wanted it to be this way. But we can change the name to original any time if you, guys, think this will be more appropriate. |
